One time I was working in a grocery store sacking groceries, and this woman came through the line wearing a button that said, “Men of quality like women of equality.” I commented to her that that was an interesting button she wore. I did it with complete respect, in a very friendly way. If I was out of bounds I didn’t know it. Anyway, the woman got seriously hostile, and started to berate me while I was trying to sack her groceries. It struck me just a little while ago that it takes so much courage to attack a grocery sacker. That’s one woman I don’t want in my life.
Sounds like she had a made up mind about interpeting any comment as negative when coming from men.
I remember when I was got admitted to psych hospital first time. I was a bit hostile towards the nurses, I might have pushed a female nurse with a flat hand or something like that because I was scared, but I wasn’t violent. Anyways I do remember this nurse saying something along the lines that all men are the same, saying negative stuff. When thinking of it retrospective it was kind of disturbing that a person can hate a whole gender. I know some men hate all women too. But still, it was unpleasant to hear a tirade about how bad a gender is.
Ofcourse I’m not saying that the women you interacted with hated all men, but there was definitly a predisposed hostility there. It’s too bad some people can’t keep a open mind.
Customer-facing jobs expose you to a lot of the worst of humanity. If I ever have to work another job with that requirement, maybe I’ll wear a button with the text “customers of quality like workers of equality” lol.
