I think here in the U.K. they are generous. I have a large surplus of disposable income a month.
A lot of the disabled in the USA have to be on hud (housing that pays for part) food stamps and Medicaid so no unless you had a good job or you get disability before 25 and your parents worked for a lot of money other wise we get very little
Edit: I know several disabled people that only get $500 a month and rent at most nice places is at lease $1000
I had a good job and already own my home so I do alright. But I hate not being able to work.
Here in the U.K. I get £1300 in disability benefits and I get housing benefits which is around £800 a month, so in total I get around £2200 a month. Because I have an established disability, i.e schizoaffective disorder I’ve never had any problems being awarded disability benefits. I have claimed disability since I was 18 and have never had no trouble claiming. On my recent renewal I didn’t have to attend an assessment, a letter from my community psychiatric nurse was enough evidence. I know claiming disability benefits is harder for some people here but if you have the evidence its easier to be awarded benefits.
Also here if you claim a certain disabled benefit called PIP mobility allowance at the highest level, (around £55 a week) you can use that money to get a mobility car, a mobility care is like a car on finance but they take the £55 a week off you, but insurance and tax is included in that.
I think I do okey.
A car in the USA is $1000 down and about $300 - $500 a month for a good car most people here have a hard time living on disability. I have to wait another year and a half for my disability and that’s if nothing goes wrong
I’m on the highest mobility allowance. I could forsake the £55 a week allowance and get a car on lease. No downpayment needed unless I want a high spec car like Audi or Mercedes. On the mobility scheme for £55 a week allowance this is war is included. I can’t drive so don’t need a car.

Sounds like a better plan going on over there than here
in the states at age 18, looking at no real employment will get SSI for around 700 dollars a month. This is the same rate the intellectual disabled get. The problem in the US is getting Medicaid by what state you’re living in. It’s an 8 paper form where you need to prove you’re working somewhere to get it here in Iowa, plus all proof. I’ve been doing this for over 27 years, and I’m sick of it. Got good motivation to do it tomorrow morning though. Phil has to help me. He promised he would.
If you make under 880 dollars, it doesn’t count as a trial month. If you occasionally go over that’s okay. Just don’t do 9 months over a 60 month period. Then it starts over. I doubt social security will cut you off. Just hire a lawyer if they do. I would only make like 600 so they still think your disabled. Don’t necessarily think my words are true. I believe I am right on some of this. Good job on getting the job. I am trying to work myself. I am only looking at 400 to 500 dollars a month.
Are you on SSI or SSDI?
I am personally a dac. I use to be on ssi. I got on disability before 22. Even though I am 39 I still collect under my dad’s social security. I might be under ssi work rules.
I wrote this on the wrong thread. I meant to write it under how to report said.
I get housing assistance, food stamps, and Medicaid, but after all of my fixed expenses I have $495 a month of disposable income. I can exist on that but it doesn’t leave much over at the end of the month.
There’s no way I could survive on my own without my partner’s income to help. My SSDI just isn’t enough. I would probably be homeless again.
I’m lucky to have been able to pay my mobile home off while I was still working. My dad doesn’t charge me rent to live on his farm which is nice. I help him on the farm like I feed his animals and stuff.
Wow - and i thought i was well off. I claim esa and pip, but i never chased for the mobility componant on pip. Im on about £967 a month, plus the housing benefit.
Im scared they are soon gonna piss me about and put me on that dreaded Universal Credit. No way i could manage my money monthly.
I live with my father who owns a house and contribute to keeping things going. I have disposable income which is good whilst it lasts. I’m not sure it will be like this forever but at the moment it’s all good.
Having money spare to spend on other things is what makes life liveable. You can’t do that on the unemployment over here these days. Sux for younger people.
