If you’re living with your mom and your mom is one of your caregivers, this was not wrong (ethically, anyhow – possibly legally depending on the laws where you live).
If you’re living on your own and your mom is not your caregiver, definitely wrong, both ethically and possibly legally.
Yeah, a complete betrayal of trust really. I’d complain to someone. Or switch doctors.
Where I live that is completely unprofessional if you are an adult.
@shutterbug @everhopeful you guys opinions are very interesting to me because you said mom might not be the caregiver so that it would be illegal to inform her. wow, I’m learning new things about law from you.
Here in America your doc aint allowed to tell anyone anything about you if you are an adult.
The exceptions being if you tell the doc they can tell certain people of your choosing about certain areas of your care.
Other than that it’s illegal.
This would only be alright if you have given your permission. Doctors can only brake confidentiality without the patients permission if they are a danger to themselves or others.
If she has legally been placed in charge of your care, she has a right to know. If you are an adult and she is not your legal guardian (you would have had to be found to be cognitively diminished enough that you require care from another) then she does not have a legal right to this information. At least not where I live.
That being said, if you are unable to support yourself or afford your own place to live, you may want to think twice about picking a fight over this. You run the risk of winning the battle, but losing the war if you wind up being evicted after causing legal headaches for your benefactor.
I wasn’t even allowed to get information about my daughter’s care when she was 16 because of doctor/patient confidentiality. I am in the US.
