Sugar is toxic.
As a diabetic I was told to stay away from it.
Sugar substitutes are probably worse.
I did go without sugar for 6 months. I did not do a thing in terms of sz symptoms.
I don’t eat sugar. Only eat whole grains. Still sz.
It is better to avoid sugar, be it white or brown, for both schizophrenics and healthy people.
Yes I find it makes me unstable to be honest so I avoid it all together but tha gain I have schizoaffective which has elements of bipolar
I eat loads of sugar and I’m fine.
It has been linked to cancer. But nutrition is probably the least reliable science there is. I’m not too worried, although I do try to avoid sugar when I have good options.
Good point man, it’s probably best to go with healthier options as much as possible but as long as you don’t have any bipolar element to your illness you’d have to gauge for yourself to see how much is right for you. Everyone needs cake sometimes XD
I do have a bipolar element to my sz. But sugar has never affected my moods, except when my blood sugar level is too low. Just like for normal people. I also drink quite a bit of coffee and have no problems with that either.
Are you on meds? That might be why; also if it’s in the form of a chocolate bar or something that also has fat in it it will digest slower. I’ve read however that refined sugar in excess will increase mania, and really how could it not :S even an ant given a drop of honey goes haywire. To each his own!
@anon9798425 I feel that you are irresponsible.
If I had more health and energy I would bring citations, but I try my best to eat ONLY the healthiest food,
food naturally rich with vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber and omega 3( as written on the nutritional value label).
I also AVOID junk food and sweets and NEVER eat them.
I also try to exercise every day.
You are encouraging a careless approach toward health and that’s a BIG DISGRACE.
It doesn’t affect me regardless of how I eat it or which, if any, meds I’m on. For normal people, sugar does not affect subsequent mood or activity level. This is just one of those cases where you can’t generalize and assume everyone has the same symptom triggers.
And yet, my health is in pristine condition and my functioning is a lot better than yours.
I know my triggers, and I do take pretty good care of my body. I think you would do well to respect other people’s personal choices more, Chess.
Unless my bloodsugar is low, sugar doesn’t affect my mood or symptoms.
If my bloodsugar gets too low, I get depressive and agressive.
But I am addicted to sugar. I think sz people have a higher risk of chasing temporary dopamine heighteners, even in sugar form.
I appreciate this thread. I guess I should swear off sugar and sweeteners.
