On my apple news app about a fifth of sz articles are about how some sz killed someone (usually family). Whenever i wanna tell someone who doesnt know, that i have sz i start thinking the first thought that will cross their mind is ‘does he want to murder me?’. I dont like how we are demonized by society, not only do we have maybe toughest MI but also worse stigma.

yes it’s awful how we are portrayed by the news and the media…including hollywood showing slasher films with mentally ill people.

I’m kind of looking forward to seeing Elizabeth Blue. The reviews on it aren’t great, but it’s supposed to be a pretty accurate portrayal, so I’m curious. Comes out on the 22nd. Select theatres, but they haven’t been announced yet.

I think about it a fair amount too, that and how to explain my level of disability to ppl, disabilities are percieved negatively too.

When I told my mom I was schizoaffective she asked when I’m going to kill her. I was shocked.
Not nice, i think sza not as bad as sz when it comes to stigma tho. Its not sza ppl killing their family in the news, its pure sz.
That’s cuz no one knows what sza is. If a sza kills their family member they probably just chock it off as sz in the media. In a way you are right, but in another way it’s no different I think.

I know what you mean. I told this guy on a social networking site about my schizophrenia and he said he wanted to meet but as long as I didn’t chase after him with a knife. In fairness though, he did say that he can be a dick sometimes.

It’s easier if ur a woman, honestly. From what i read women are more likely to kill their kids. Plus if a guy is scared of a girl it hurts his ego so they wont let sz intimidate them. Women i am sure are afraid of sz men, women are already scared of men anyways.
They think sza is a mild form of sz i think. Which in some sense can be true, but depression hurts too. U may be right the media just calls sza sz instead in those cases, or maybe not due to political correctness.
My aunt is sick with schizophrenia and her kids are scared to have her around her grandchildren. She hasn’t seen her oldest granddaughter in 20 years since her first diagnosis

Statistically we are less prone to do violence than the general population unless it comes to self harm!
Too many schizophrenics take the terrible option so that inflates things but really there’s few people who harm others. That is the reality that is backed up by the evidence.
It makes good media blaming something for insenstive violence…like when a mother kills her kids…it doesn’t help us and it doens’t help the poor person who acted…Most of us don’t act on violence but there is always that 1 % of 1% ( I’d be interested to actually know the percentage who act out! ??? )
