Is recovery possible for someone diagnosed with SZ

Not as motivated as I used to be but no major symptoms! Hallelujah!

Can you not discuss with your psychiatrist going back on Geodon as you state above you had good times on it?

I don’t want to interfere as I appreciate everyone is different.

It was slightly better for positive symptoms than Vraylar and I cannot go back on it as my cardilogist was the one who had me taken off of it. I’m going to have positive symptoms either way.

I’m not sure I can add anything new to the conversation. However, I will say that for anyone who was initially put in a psyche ward for psychosis and diagnosed as schizophrenic and have stayed out of the hospital since then has definitely showed some recovery.

I am a hundred times better now than when I was first diagnosed back in 1980 and I was hospitalized. I’ve had a few blips like when I relapsed in 1989 and more recently when I was hospitalized for two days back in 2015. I recovered from those fairly fast.

As to anyone talking about a full recovery I think it largely depends on the definition of the person talking about it. I read many definitions of a full recovery from researchers, psychiatrists and mental health workers Etc. and none of their definitions fit mine and even their definitions differ from each other. To me a full recovery is someone being off meds for as significant amount of time like 4 years, not experiencing any symptoms and functioning fully such as with a job or school. I’ve never seen anyone like this.

But a degree of recovery is certainly possible.

The thing about being off your medication for 4+ years. It soon catches up with you and you relapse down the line

Looking online Vraylar works in a similar way to abilify and helps with negative symptoms acting on 5htp receptors

If you say so. Stuff like that I leave to pharmacists. It doesn’t blur my vision as severely as Disabilify and the other side-effects are slighter and therefore more tolerable.

Hah. Not really, no.

It seems it is rare that anyone lasts as long as four years without relapsing. That’s why I used that figure, if anyone can go four years without relapsing that’s quite a feat and four years seems like good evidence that they are successfully off their medication.

Totally agree! In 2005 I stopped taking Haldol and started Abilify. After being admitted to the hospital was when I was given Abilify!

Sorry to hear about that. I take mirtazapine for the negative symptoms.

I have never come across anyone in history that has been symptom free without medication. Unless you know of someone.

No, I have the same experience, I’ve been saying for years that in the fourteen years I’ve been on this site I haven’t seen even one person who has come off medication successfully. I’ve seen plenty of people who are off meds for 7 or 8 months or a year and claim success but I don’t think I’ve seen anyone make it to the four year mark successfully,

Despite the fact that people will post studies showing that the recovery rate is 1/3 and that many schizophrenics don’t need meds. I’ve seen enough of those studies; i don’t think they are accurate.

Even famous people like John Nash who came off his medication had severe symptoms. I have read of professors of medicine who are schizophrenic - they don’t disclose whether they are on medication.

Having said that Elyn Saks takes clozapine

I do hobbies for mine.

That’s interesting Shutterbug.

What sort of hobbies do you do?

I like listening to 80’s pop music mainly.

I am as recovered as I am happy with…I love my a p…generic prolixin…fluphenazine…it works wonders for me and I’ve been on this med longer than ten years…

It’s a long list. Outdoor walks. Riding eScooter. VR exercise. Paddle boarding. Photography. Writing. Cooking. Archery. Amateur broadcasting. Retro video gaming. Watching bad TV/movies. Some volunteering.

It’s good you can volunteer and lead a purposeful life.

My purpose is to save the beauty in this moment for the ones that follow.
