Is it worth waiting for an Autism Assessment?

I got a letter today that said it might be in 9 months from when the referral was made in February, and that effects of Covid-19 might mean even longer.

My psychologist told me she is retiring in October, and she is the one who wanted it done to inform treatment.

I am struggling to see the point in doing it. As far as I am concerned I have already grown into an adult, and all the help and support I could have got in my formative years at school for example are long gone.

I will not get another psychologist, and my sessions will likely be over by October anyway.

So after reading that, should I withdraw my referral?

It will be good for whoever replaces your pdoc to know if you have autism, so they can treat you properly.

I never really got proper therapy for aspegers. Even after the diagnosis, they question the condition. It’s like pulling teeth. To answer your post title, yes, get it done asap.

You’re discounting things you don’t know could affect you. If you get an assessment and a job fires you for a thing related to your diagnosis you will have protection. Please keep trying.

You’re still young enough that if you are on the spectrum the knowledge of such, by your mental health team , could improve how well you do .

Autism and SZ treatments are very similar. They use antidepressants and antipsychotics to control depression, rage, anger and aggression.

Autism and SZ both don’t have a 100% cure, just supportive and management meds. Meds only treat positive symptoms and not negative and cognitive symptoms.
