it true that 10% of schizophrenics commit suicide
Here is a piece of some important stats
People with schizophrenia are known to die much earlier (Saha et al., 2007) than expected. Up to 40% (Bushe et al., 2010) of this excess premature mortality can be attributed to suicide and unnatural deaths, with one authoritative review (Palmer et al., 2005) estimating a lifetime suicide risk of 4.9% for people with schizophrenia. Detection of those at risk is clinically important, but risk prediction is known to be imprecise (Goldney, 2000).
yes!
A friend in the struggle,
Rogueone.
Yes,10% of schizophrenic die by suicide, most die by heart disease, physical disease. The good news is Schizophrenic die of Cancer is lesser
My dad was Bipolar, and he committed suicide at age 53, despite having undergone ECT and being on 10 (!) psych meds at the time of his death.
That figure is a hard one to prove. The latest on this is that it is anywhere between 4-10%. The biggest risk is post first psychotic break in the acute phase. An other prognostic indicator is whether a person is high functioning at the time of onset.
There is also contradictory indicators high functioners maybe more at risk of suicide but move them past the acute phase into the recovery phase and they then show the greatest recovery. People who have insidious onset , slow and gradual , maybe less a risk of suicide but it can be a poor prognostic indicator in terms of recovery.
I do not know what the correct % is, but I know many people who have commited suicide, some of them have been mentally ill with depression and so on, I once took a razor blade and did some wrist cutting, but I survived, here I am although now it seems somebody has hacked my sz account.
WHO THE HELL HACK YOU?
I am going to beat him up,if I found out,^^
Hi Greg - I am sorry for your loss - It seems that the suicide percentages are higher with bipolar disorder.
I found these percentages online:
Suicide is the number one cause of premature death among people with bipolar disorder, with 15 percent to 17 percent taking their own lives as a result of negative symptoms that come from untreated illness.
It’s very unfortunate if it’s true.
Karl, many people who end their life are not always psychotic or people with schizophrenia. They just can’t see the bright side of life. It is sad that they can’t get help at the right time. With depression it is very easy to slip into such a state. I wish if they could realise that there is always a solution to any problem. We just need to try it again with a different approach. Every time until we find one!
I am very sorry to hear that. It is sad. I wish he could get some help at that time.
