Schizophrenic

I just found out people with schizophrenia live 15-18 years less than people that don’t have it . I feel bummed, sad , helpless . I don’t know what to think of it . Maybe it’s all the stress , all the worries , all the anger , and confusion schizophrenics go through that lead to those negative years .

I heard that too, but not sure how accurate if anyone has info?

Does the higher suicide rate (sadly) bring down the mean life expectancy for people with schizophrenia? Because if that’s the case, it would skew the average life expectancy of people with schizophrenia.

I heard that stat without suicides included. I’m not at all upset about a shortened life span.

I go between having hope that I will make something of my life and wanting the world to just let me f*cking die.

I’m not long for this earth. I’m pumped every 3 weeks with that Abilify junk…I smoke…drink too much coffee…don’t exercise much. I figure I probably have another 10 years or so to go. I’m 53 in a week.

Pffft, the internet says a lot of things. I’m dying at 80 try and stop me.

I got sepsis few years back, which was probably from poor hygiene. I am gonna guess that not going to the doctor as often is a cause for many schizophrenics. Next time I’ll just go in sooner if I have a big infection.

I get that and I smoke and won’t exercise. Ì really would be happy if I only had 10 years left.

From what I heard, they do factor suicides into their figures. Our life expectancy is lower for many reasons. A poor diet, we tend to be obese. Lots of schizophrenics smoke and drink and do drugs. Those things can take their toll on us. We don’t exercise enough, we live sedentary lifestyles. All these things factor in. These things cause stuff like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes. And like people mention, stress can lower our immune system opening doors to get other health problems. The thing is, most of these problems are under our control. If we eat right, exercise regularly, abstain from cigarettes, booze and drugs, be more active we can live longer. But it’s easier said than done.

But what about your children? They need their mom. I would be devastated if my mom died young.

I thought you were starting college. Don’t give up, college it can be a wonderful and fun time. After that you get a job and start growing up.

Don’t quit now, the first 3 to 5 years of a mentall illness dz are the hardest aka critical period.

After that it usually gets better

Also it can be a long period until you found a right med. Even if you think you have the best something else Wil come and “blow your mind”

They will all be adults. In 10 years my youngest will be 25. They will all have their own lives to live. They’ll miss me but they will do well.

@anon92220549: Don’t worry, my mood is stable. It’s just that sometimes I don’t feel like I want to continue. The rest of my life is just daunting sometimes.

@FatMama: They will likely make it, yes, however they won’t be better off for it. Children love their mothers. For me, even knowing that my mom is in this world makes it feel safer.

I think if we have a good life style and healthy habits, we can live longer.

I eat healthy. I walk twice a day. I don’t do drugs or smoke. I don’t see why I can’t live a normal lifespan.

I live a healthy lifestyle. I eat healthy, sleep well, do yoga daily, meditate twice daily, see my doctor regularly, I don’t smoke or do drugs. I rarely drink alcohol. My weight is within normal limits. I don’t see why I can’t live out a normal lifespan. Unless my belief about the VA is correct: they are killing us through the medications they dole out to us.

While it is true that the life of Schizophrenics is short when compared to normal people, there is no reason to feel disappointed. If you don’t have bad habits like smoking and alcohol consumption and if your parents/grand parents had long life(genetically you have long life) then you can be rest assured that you have a long life. You should take good medication that suits you and exercise regularly and watch your diet, you should have a prolonged life. Some times it is the worry that kills us more than other factors.

I’m living to Christ’s second coming boys.

I have heard it also, but I am not too worried- if my lifespan is indeed shorter than everyone else.
When my time comes, it will come… I just try to live my life as fulfilling as possible.

I just want to be a person that could give, even I don’t get anything back from them.

My aunt died June 2018. She was 82. She was diagnosed in her early 30s with schizophrenia. So, you too can live a long life. But most importantly a happy life!!

Do our meds affect our lifespan?
