2 in 5 people with Schizophrenia Attempt Suicide

A new study has uncovered a strong link between schizophrenia and the likelihood of attempting suicide. The risk is particularly high for women, people with substance abuse issues, and those who were abused when they were children.

The lifetime prevalence of suicide attempts among individuals with schizophrenia was 39.2 percent compared to 2.8 percent of those without the disorder.

That number is really high.

I read somewhere that 10 per cent of schizophrenics succeed in killing themselves.

Good that the study admits the vulnerability of our group. Makes me shudder to think that when unwell, I’ve contemplated this very thing, often alone, unspoken to those around me. I think so many of us can relate. Good to have medical professionals acknowledge our struggle with this.

I know it horrible! My sons doc told me that the suicide rate is higher in teenage boys with sz. check out NAMI suicide facts Anyway it is a terrible thing… My Dad committed suicide when he was 45 and my son is 19 with sz and has tried 2 times in Dec to commit. I am so scared for him. I love him so much.

@talktome, you seem to really be doing all you can for your son. You should feel proud of the effort you give! A parents love, when expressed in action, is wonderful. I know it can be downright agonizing to watch him go through this, but having you gives him an edge!!

I almost offed myself during one of my psychotic episodes. My wife and kids and my music kept me here. Thankfully.

Glad you stayed aboard @Patrick, the ride can be considerably less bumpy on the other side of fully psychotic.

Yeah, so true…

I think the expression goes something like…

“When you think it’s the very, very end…well, that’s just the beginning!”

Crazy statistics huh?

Had schiz for 3+ years.
never once attempted suicide or had a suicidal thought (yay) me!

Another alarming statistic here in Australia.
70% of mental health patients have been either before hospitalization during or after or at some time in their lives have been sexually assaulted in their lives.
Some times by staff, members of the community or patients/consumers themselves.

I had one suicide attempt at the age of about 31 or 32. I am now 74, and still sick with SZ, mainly suffering now from negative symptoms, asociality, and self stigmatization. I had another preparation for suicide using the same method. I attributed my wish for suicide at that time to extreme embarrassment and depression from the AP I was taking. I blamed the depression from the AP on my mother who was responsible for my taking the AP in the first place and the embarrassment on the attitudes and behaviors of two older patients from my hospital ward. My daughter committed suicide at the age of 18, also on a mental hospital ward. It seems strange to me that I have never shared much of this with anyone but psychiatrists. Now I have the opportunity to share this with a lot of younger people that I will never know in real life. Thanks to someone, maybe the SZ Amin and to you all.
