Movies don’t seem as good as they used to be. Back then we had “One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest,” “A Clockwork Orange,” “Schindlers List,” “Good Will Hunting,” etc., and nowadays we have films that are really lacking.
I guess the animation graphics to a large extent are responsible for a change in how movies look and feel nowadays. Might work well in sci-fi and adventure movies like LOTR, but in everything else it doesen’t really fit in my opinion. I guess they hardly use stuntmen anymore, everything to save money.
Yes. I agree with this so much. I learnt my lesson 15 years ago after being very disappointed with a few films. I think its worth reading reviews to see what is actually worth watching and what is just slop.
I used to watch lots of Red Letter Media (a Youtube channel) to see suggestions for films.
I think the issue is that films have insanely huge budgets now and are often not a specific writer/director’s vision but instead seen as a product with a committee overseeing it to make it as financially successful as possible. So you end up with very lifeless and safe films that don’t really tell an interesting story or provide anything unique. They are instead trying to appeal to a wide as an audience as possible and are often boring and not worth the time spent watching.
It shares some similarities to mainstream games where so many games play identically and don’t do anything new or unusual because they are focused on making a return rather than creating an interesting experience.
Plenty of exceptions. There was lots of crap in the past and there’s lots now, but people tend to selectively filter their memories of the past to remember the good things and forget the bad.
I don’t mind CGI when it is done well and it improves the story. I don’t even mind when it is done badly and still improves the story. I hate it when CGI is the only point of the film.
Totally agree. Film makers use CGI for literally everything now bar the actors. Its not just monsters, but things props, locations sometimes action scenes etc. Sometimes it works but other times it just feels so artificial and detracts from the film. Even not very good movies from the 00s and before feel a lot more visually detailed having had so much work put into the designs of the sets.
I remember rewatching Van Helsing a few years ago which I thought wasn’t great at the time of release but it was pretty fun and CGI was mostly used for monsters as special effects.
It also totally changes how film is made when things like set lighting is all done on a computer.
Maybe we are spoilt with too many good movies. There is nothing new anymore. Similar to jokes either you find them a good joke, bad joke or boring joke.
