Is it disrespectful for people to hijack a thread?

I would have started a poll but that’s politically incorrect. I’ll let the parents do that.

I think on this forum… offense is often taken rather than given when it comes to thread hijacking…

I remember having a conversation in a thread close to when I first joined the forum and then I was yelled at for derailing the thread. But I don’t think that was disrespectful unless it was some game to just single someone out. But that doesn’t always go the way someone wants though. Just like hijacking a thread.

I kinda wish people would stay more on topic. I’ve had many posts get derailed or people have just ignored my topic entirely. But I’m also controversial on here (according to people) so Idk if it’s just me? Or if other people have this problem to? As for disrespectful it depends on the way it gets derailed.

I think it depends on the situation. There’s one person that I think has a habit of going into threads and talking about things that have nothing to do with the topic and they do this very regularly. It personally drives me insane, but I don’t think anyone else seems to care.

I have a feeling I’m guilty of this, although I’m not sure. I try to at least stay on topic if I can’t address the original post directly. I never do it (in this forum) with malice in my mind.

I think whether it be disrespectful comes down to intent. Is there ill-will intended toward the original poster? Or was it an accidental derailing?

It’s not polite. When I realize I’m starting to get sucked into a separate convo I generally try to wrap it up or move it to PM.

Im fairly new so my opinion is said humbly, but I don’t mind when people do that. Its kind of nice seeing that people care about eachother here. Makes me want to stick around actually.

Without chat people use these threads to say hello sometimes. I’ve been guilty of taking part in that as one today but I don’t think it’s being disrespectful. Yeah it could be private messaging which would be better but it’s just how people use the forum. If someone says something to me I reply.

Does anyone elses paranoia spike when someone mentions a person without being specific with names… and then post off topic on a thread about being on topic…and spike their paranoia again… lol

Short answer yes but I made it long to get around the 15 character thing

Haha sorry. I should have known better. I get paranoid about that same sort of thing.

I think sometimes one thing leads to another - like the song says. But if it’s intentional, then it’s rude. If it’s accidental, well, it’s just an accident.

some of the best conversations start as diversions from the topic, i think it can be good sometimes

I don’t think it’s disrespectful…

Infact I sometimes get carried away. There’s no harm done in the end…

I generally try to stay on topic, unless it’s the “say anything” thread. I mean, that’s what that thread is there for, after all.
