Is it cool enought to practice meditation when u r psychotic

i am no new to it.
i have practice meditation before …but couldn’t stay still and concentrate…
this time i am getting med form pdoc my appointment is 2moro before that i am having few check ups like blood sugar and thyroid…i already written my plans after meds …
went for cbt not really helpful…i was on 21 dys cbt trail.couldn’t complete…
i alreay taken appointment with pdoc 2moro .but before starting

Many pdocs say meditation is contraindicated for those with psychosis . Discuss with your pdoc and have support in hand before going down this route.

I would suggest sticking with short sessions of mindfulness, not more than 10 minutes. Exercise can be a good replacement, I go cycling or do tai chi.

Meditation is pretty powerful, but I don’t know if it is that powerful. Psychosis is very strong.

Ya I heard meditation can cause dissociation, which I have.

After doing meditation 5 days straight last week I went pretty psychotic, had much more hallucinations before bedtime(I normally don’t hallucinate at all except some here and there before sleeping), had insomnia, auditory distortions, a nightmare and felt a bit sort of “pre-delusional”. Normally I have psychosis under control with medication. After the 5th day it sort of “clicked” for me and it became much easier to zone out and after it I felt much more present, also it felt like there was less of a boundary between me and the world. Too bad it makes me psychotic, I really liked what it did to me, before the 5 days I tried it very sporadically for months, but with a different technique. I didn’t read about sz and meditation before doing it, but yea there are cases of even non-Schizophrenics going psychotic on meditation retreats, but I also read about schizophrenics who have benefited a lot from meditation. This also means that I will probably never become enlightened, which is much worse to me than not getting the benefits of meditation.

Enlightenment supposedly only comes after you drop it as a goal. So i wouldn’t worry too much about achieving it. And even then, Tibetan Buddhism says you get several chances shortly after you die.

Practicing Meditation while psychotic is downright dangerous

I don’t know if we mean the same thing when we say enlightenment. I was put off by it many years ago when I first heard about it, thinking it’s a hippie thing or a exclusively Buddhist thing that’s like a mindset or something like that. Also I saw debates between atheists and Deepak Chopra, he got really defensive and was yelling and stuff, but now I know he’s obviously not enlightened. I haven’t read that much about it to write a good comment, but have read that meditation is a vital point in achieving it and it takes a lot of “enlightenment work” to achieve it, we’re talking thousands of hours. I’m not a Buddhist at all, I’m a hardcore atheist, materialist, so I don’t believe there’s anything after death. I’m not gonna pretend to be an expert on it, so I’m just going to point to the guy who opened my eyes about it, his one hour long videos on enlightenment have been some, if not the most, mind-blowing ones I’ve seen.

I used to try to meditate while psychotic… I was having a lot of sneaky brained thinking about being a Zen master… and expanding to the universe…

Meditation was just opening myself up for more head circus. It was very bad… I came out of it worse then when I started… I was then even more convinced I was seeing the future.

Now that I’m stable… I’m med compliant… some mindfulness and grounding is helping me.

But I wouldn’t suggest it while your suffering.

Staying in yoga poses makes it easier not to think about anything else.

I tend to agree if the pt is still floridly delusional. But I know at least 20 people on anti-Ps who meditate regularly because they can and it produces both relaxation and unwiring from the voices and other sources of dismay.

I think the relative “risk” or “safety” of it also depends on the meditation style. I have seen people get very disturbed from using the Hare Krishna style chants, for example. (These types of meditation are the ones used by most mind-control cults, btw. Because they narrow rather than broaden awareness.)

But the same people gained tremendously from using the Vipassana style “open awareness” (or “mindfulness”) meditations like those used in many of the modern psychotherapies like ACT and MBSR.

I am only voicing what many/most pocs say. Of course there will always be exceptions. I still think that talking it over with the pdoc and having support in place is the best option. It allows for hopefully quick intervention if things go pear shaped.

I’m around these people four days a week. I would say that 2/3rds to 3/4s favor the meditations I described above within the parameters I indicated.

Actually – for some psychotic pts (within the parameters I described above) – the voices are “quieted” or even dismantled altogether by insistent, Vipassana-style meditation. The pt is taught to focus directly upon the Voice while seeing it AS “just a voice” and hearing the spoken words just as spoken words rather than as, for example, “emotionally loaded commands or threats.”

The method works quite well for some (myself included), but is not appropriate for others. I would not attempt it alone, but there are many specialists in sz psychotherapy now who can use these techniques.

hi notmoses i have praticed meditation before but i dont know i was psychotic
its very hard 4 me to concentrate …
people say that don’t practice meditation which is passive …like Vipassana…
i used to be sannyasi of osho …
i did lots of dynamic meditation by osho i couldn’t benefit from it…

According to u which meditation style u would suggest me…???
cause i am hyper sensitive and psychotic…
because i am from land of Nepal where Buddha was born…

meditation (like the closed eye sitting still kind) would make things much worse for me. too quiet, then id hear louder voices or see closed eye hallucinations.

my favorite meditative activity is mountain biking. its peaceful for me.
