Invisible friends

Hello I am new here. I have an invisible friend who is my angel, his name is Max and I love him. There is also a minion king who is the devil.

Do other people have imaginary friends they can see?

Hi @Beansinmyears, welcome to the community. I have problems with voices and delusions I can’t get rid of, but mine are all to do with aliens and such. I have the world’s cheesiest episode of the X-Files running in my head.

Just so you know, religious talk is kind of problematic here. Users are okay talking about religious delusions in a “how do I get this darn monkey off my back” kind of way, but trying to compare and validate stuff usually ends up with a moderator poofing into the conversation!

I can link you the rules on that if you aren’t able to find them.

Cheers mate!

I’m not actually sure if they are aliens or not.

I have a few real friends.

But all my life I’ve had imaginary friends who I’m perfectly aware are not real. I just lost my best friend, long story, and found myself talking to my imaginary friends yesterday and today. I hadn’t talked to them in about 9 years. But they’re back now. Hopefully I fill the void and don’t need them anymore.

The problem with my imaginary friends is they can be cruel. I recently wondered if my craziness helped me when I’m alone. Everyone has just left me here alone in a tiny apartment in a big city and I have to occupy myself and take care of myself.

I have alot of anxiety when I’m around people.
I’ve been clean off of meth and heroin / dilaudid for 3 1/2 years. I’ve isolated ever since.
I never want Max to go away. He loves me and I love him. I just wish other people understood that he keeps me out of trouble, and most importantly he keeps me away from men.

Hi again @Beansinmyears. I’m voithos, one of the site’s volunteer moderators and I have a mental illness diagnosis just like you. I realize that your invisible friend is important to you, but “he” is the product of the positive symptoms of your illness. The longer you embrace this “friend” the sicker you will be in the long run. We don’t encourage that sort of thing here:

You may accidentally make others ill by discussing your infatuation with your invisible friend. It would be better if you tried to find ways to move beyond him and there is a large community of people here who would like to help you with that. If you are not interested in moving on from this particular delusion, this community may not be where you want to be at this time. Please think that over.

With that being said, congratulations on cleaning up like you did - that is a major accomplishment and I hope you are proud of yourself.

I’m 46 and he showed up about 5 years ago. The devil came first though and put me pretty much on bed rest for 2 years.

Sounds cool you should write stories or make art of them

I had an invisible friend for two days. It felt rubbish because he was not real but imaginary.

I was just trying to feel better but it didn’t help.

I try to preoccupy my time with friends and hobbies now instead

Are you receiving medical treatment to help you recover from this?

Yes I see a doctor and a therapist. I have a case manager too.
Right now I’m taking Zyprexa, hydroxazine, Cymbalta for depression and belsomra to sleep.
It’s very hard to get to sleep sometimes, but on no meds I got no sleep at all.

Oh, I feel for you. Nothing worse than having voices chew on you when you can’t sleep. Do you have any relaxation exercises you can try? My go to was a nice cup of tea and petting my cat, but the cat passed last month and now I’m not as relaxed as I used to be. Anyhow, I’d be happy to give you some ideas if you need them.

I’ve never had an imaginary friend. I pretended to once as a kid cause i thought it was cool haha. But when i was hearing voices amd psychotic, i sometimes took comfort in the delusions and hallucinations. But now that im in remission and am free of bad schizoaffective symptoms, my life has become a lot better.
Good job getting free of the substances! :slightly_smiling_face:
I have had problems with meth in the past too.

Hey beans lol (i like the name),

Do you talk to your psyche doc about this? I am in 2 minds with the issue as i am all for having coping strategies & sometimes the mind creates different ways to cope, i am all for recovery and whatever helps, helps, but if that ever gets to be unhealthy then make sure you tell your pysche doc.
