Improving cognition and negative symptoms

Hi,

The thing I hate the most about having schizophrenia is my decline in cognition and the negative symptoms. I believe this is some sort of brain deterotation. Anyone know if there are any research on the way to improve this? Drugs that might enhance or fix the cognitive impairments in schizophrenia?

Try sarcosine.

Yeah try sarcosine. Though my cognitive and negative symptoms improved without any supplements. Just my regular antipsychotic. over the past year I managed to go from just surviving to living an ok life. It doesn’t seem to happen to many people though. However there is a lot more to recovery than just negative symptoms. Hopefully you learn what I mean and are able to move on with your life.

What do you mean there’s a lot more to recovery than just negative symptoms? The negative symptoms hamper my ability to work and function in society.

In mental health class and even day treatment many see recovery as a process of coming to terms with the illness through phases and eventually reaching a stage where you are confident and realistic about your goals. Work isn’t the only aspect of recovery, though it will help you. Many in support group were able to slowly move into their own place, find activities like aerobics or volunteering, and manage a good life in their own way even if they cannot work full time. Some turn down the dark path and let their work or life problems make them suicidal. You’ll find that there is life after illness and you can do quite well for yourself. Getting a job within your abilities can help.

So the best I can hope for is a boring mediocre life. That’s encouraging.

So there will be no fixes for the negative symptoms.

Sarcosine might help you though I found no evidence that it helped me. All I can say is that your life will be worse if you don’t learn to cope with your symptoms and eventually find a healthy place for yourself. It is hard to accept things at first. Maybe a med change will help you. I am pretty happy with my life minus minor setbacks. I have many friends, I am thinking I’ll settle down in a few years, and I’m training to substitute teach. But I was not always like this and at one point I had a good job or die mentality that really wasn’t good for me. Which isn’t to say that you can’t get a good job despite negative symptoms, depending on functioning and how much you can tolerate.

How old are you?

And you haven’t really answer the question about new drugs fixing the negative symptoms and cognitive impairments.

I’m 26. Honestly I’m not clear about new drugs. There are some in the works, I think, but nothing on the market right now. A med change or sarcosine might be your best bet right now to better functioning.

Quillivant is the solution.

Aricept and Eldepryl are also good.
