I started studying Chinese because my wife is Chinese and I may be traveling there in the future. It’s pretty fun and it’s good exercise for the brain!
That’s so cool you might get to go there. I especially like that you’re learning the language. Are you learning mandolin? I find it hard to make some of their sounds.
What a lovely gesture towards your partner and her culture. Learning is almost like a superpower that keeps us young.
Fun to learn new things.
I used an app before and picked up some danish.
Lol! My autocorrect changed madarin to mandolin. Sorry! Lol

What kind of Chinese are you learning?
@VanDam. I’ve tried to learn Chinese before. I just can’t do the pronunciations. Do you have any suggestions?
Great! Nice towards your wife too. I lived in China for half a year and studied Chinese there.
I love the beauty of their written language incredibly, though i found it a harder language to learn than expected. I struggled a bit with the “tones” for a while (the melody of words changing the meaning of the word completely), because that’s not how we use language.
I found it really fulfilling to be able to have small conversations there and people responded so enthusiasticly to it.
Hope you will enjoy yourself and learn more about your wife’s culture and language.
@loke, cool! I think only talking to Chinese people is the way to learn it and automatically will make you pick up their way of speaking. I think it is a real hard language to learn without loads of practice. Maybe find a language buddy around there or through the internet?
I’m at a beginner stage. I know a little bit from my year in Taiwan in the past. It’s fun and there is loads on youtube. Plus I have my wife and other friends to practice with.
Welcome to studying Manderin and Chinese culture! I have spent most of my time studying English. I found it pretty hard as I am aging.
That’s cool! I’d like to learn a second language eventually.
@VanDam. You may be able to language swap with @walterchang. He’s looking to learn English. After I am efficient enough in Arabic I may try Chinese. He wanted to language swap with me but I turned him down cos Arabic is my main focus right now.
I’ve been watching cartoons in Arabic. You pick up some stuff that way. I do YouTube searches such as “Peppa Pig in Arabic”
Canto or mando?
In cantonese I learned various phrases to tell the dog to sit , lie down, your falling, time for sleep, and time to go out
My gf is chinese
Who knew dogs could learn chinese
Yeah, I’m studying Mandarin. There is TONS of helpful stuff on youtube. It’s really interesting too and not boring so when I’m not speaking with my wife I can find plenty to keep me entertained there.
