I'm not sure how to help my mom!

My mom has been dealing with schizophrenia for the past 4 yrs or so. She has been living with my grandparents (her parents) for the majority of the time but while she was living there she wouldn’t take her medicine and she would drink a lot. Now she is living with me (her son) and I make her take her medicine and I have a no alcohol policy in the apt…I thought thing were getting better but lately they’ve seemed to get worse. The voices she hears mainly talk about rape and tourture according to her, but the part that bothers me is that she genuinely believes that the government has put transmitters in her ears and that her whole family including myself is in on it…she’s really stubborn and doesn’t believe she has schizophrenia. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed and need help in ways to get her to accept that it is schizophrenia and not the government or her family…
She is currently taking 20mg of latuda once nightly any help would be appreciated

Maybe you would feel more comfortable on the family/ caregiver forum. I know it’s scary but people on this forum can only tell you how they did not how they dealt with a family member with the illness.

@ConcernedSon I’d like to encourage you to join our forum for Family and Caregivers that can be found at:

While this is a peer support forum for people with schizophrenia and other closely related psychotic disorders, the Family forum is specifically for people like yourself, who have a loved one they are concerned about.

Also, please let your loved one know about this forum as they may find it helpful.

Best of luck,

I’m not sure it’s possible to talk someone into insight.

However, if she will take meds, take her to the doctor, she may need a dosage adjustment or a new med. Also, while this board is for peer support, you can still read the threads on proven supplements which may help (l Theanine and sarcosine mostly. Also fish oil, b vitamins, D vitamin).

Your mom is also welcome here for support.
