I'm considering trying abilify

I’m on zyprexa. I read about people here on the forum saying that abilify makes you feel less of a zombie than zyprexa. Is that true? Anyone who’s tried both medications?

I tried both and well I didn’t have any dramatic zombie-like effects from either I am on Abilify now and it’s much healthier for my body than Zyprexa was Zyprexa made me constipated and Zyprexa made me gain quite a bit of weight

I suffer no side effects with Abilify

I tried abilify 1 day at 15mg. It was a nightmare for me. Got very ill with all kinds of side effects and it took very long to get the medication out of the system. Halflife is like 72hours.

Maybe it works good for you though.

@Mr_Hope I will take it slowly. It sounds like you started on a rather high dose right away? Anyway thanks for the input. I think I’m going to cross taper slowly if I were to change, so I notice potential negative effects.

@FreeLunch I’m glad that it works out better for you.

It depends on dose and if it is combined with other psych meds.

Yes, it was a shock to the system, but I could feel the drug in me for like 5 days after taking it, and I definitly didn’t like how I felt on it.

I see. I’m hoping it will work well for me if I decide to change. My psychiatrist said that some people could experience anxiety on it, but that it often goes away after some weeks.

I don’t know how to describe what I felt. It was almost like some entity took over my body or something.

But many people here say it’s what works best for them, so it’s hit or miss like with all ap’s I guess.

I have experienced not being in control of my body when I wasn’t on any medication, that someone controlled my actions and movement, felt kind of scary. Was it kind of like that?

But yeah, it’s like you said, it’s impossible to know what medications will work for you. You just have to try…

Most people on this forum have had great success w abilify. Not to ignore @Mr_Hope 's experience.

I started at 2mg. And for the first couple days I broke the tablet in half even.

I swear in a couple hours after first dose I thought it made a difference.

Kind of like feeling my body was in a straight jacket, very uncomfortable. And I got many weird and exaggerated sexual thoughts on it. That was another thing about it.

Surely, it more activing but you could also get akathisia. I still felt like a zombie on 2.5-5mg, individual response is important

I do well on zyprexa. I really wanted abilify to work. Better weight management and it seemed better activating wise from people’s stories here…

Really wanted it too work and spent a couple of years on it. Got bad akithesia early but got over that and it just never jelled for me. I was doing poorly and stuck it out for a year and more…went back to zyprexa.

There’s just no way of knowing but depends on your function. If your doing ok then probably stay but if your struggling or looking for better function it’s probably worth a try. I’ve done it a few times and sometimes it’s worked and sometimes like abilify it’s failed. You just don’t know and we’re all different with our meds.

It does okay for me. Im positive symptoms free, and I do voluntary work 10 hours per week.

Im looking to do full time employment. It does keep me awake at night though. Insomnia i mean. Which then makes me tired during the day
