I'm an addict and it wears on me

I have pretty much stopped drinking except for holidays. pretty good I’d say. I quit smoking cigarettes almost three months ago now…pretty good. yeah, yay for me. Now I have daily arguments with myself to just start smoking again…not an option I would like to say. but it rears it’s ugly head every morning and on through most of my days I’m romancing the cigarette. I am glad I am a non smoker. super glad…I guess I will always have the cravings. one more thing…my weed use…I’m contemplating giving that up too because every time I withdraw from not having weed I confuse it with wanting nicotine I thinik…someone kick my butt and tell me what to do…I’m clueless.

Congratulations on taking control! I suspect it will get easier with time. I quit smoking 26 years ago and as time went on I thought about it less and less. After a year or two, I never thought about it. With regards to weed, if you can live without it, then why not? Live a substance free life. No alcohol, no nicotine and no weed.
The brain can be trained to do anything, including live without substances. I know it’s hard though. 3 months without ciggs! That’s awesome

wow, what a pep talk !! You got me going…yes, I want to be free from it all…I’ve loved drinking, I’ve loved weed and I’ve loved cigarettes…but I’ve always hated what it does to my wallet, my health and my spirituality. not in that order.

really though thanks a lot !!

Get a piece of notebook paper and list neatly in two column’s the pros and cons of smoking or drinking. You know what these are.

Then tape it to your refrigerator and look at it and weigh the negative things and positive things every time you feel like giving in to your vices. You can’t quit on your own so the next step is getting help.

I’m an addict, too. I haven’t smoked for greater than two and half years, but I’m still one little puff away from four packs a day.

It’s very kewl. When I’m downstairs locking the door to my apartment on my way out, I know I’haven’t accidentally left a cigarette burning anywhere.

Remind yourself every time you get a craving of what you’re going to buy with the money you saved from not getting the cruddy for you stuff you crave.

Make a jar for a few things you would like to buy,
maybe one expensive item for long term goal,
one inexpensive item for short term goal,
and one ‘daily’ item for instant gratification…could be a pen, a snack you love, a meal to make…anything that gives you a squeezy hug saying yayyy @jukebox, you did great!

Then when the craving hits, take the $$ you’d have spent and divide it up into the jars.
At firs, put most in the daily jar so you can actually get something that day, but add a little to the other jars so you gradually see a reward coming .

It’s not easy to beat the cravings out the door without support, so you make sure you keep on posting here and letting us give you some Big Squeezy Hug support to say
Yay @jukebox, I know you can do it! Stay strong, and reward yourself with something good for you, because I know you sure deserve it!
Smooches!

Huge congrats jukebox.

It’s massive that you have got this far - i think you know the best thing to do - and consider whether you really prefer to be a non smoker!

I think when i realised this the battle was over

thanks @Csummers I would do anything for a squeezy hug from you! you make me feel better.

@77nick77 aww Nick I can’t join an anonymous group. I already tried that. I think I can do it on my own with weed because I don’t smoke it that much anymore…just a matter of stopping altogether.

@Thanna thanks sweetie. I believe you hit the nail on the head when you said, you have to consider yourself a non smoker. easier said than done !! but I’m working on it!!

make a new friend, start a new venture - meet anyone new somehow - i don’t know how to find that person but they’ll never know you smoked
