The brain is a very complex structure, we’ve only recently begun to scrape the surface of understanding it. Even a small physiological disturbance can result in faulty sensory processing, as in the case of people with mental illness.

I’m not spiritual and I thought the voices were being transmitted through technology. the visual hallucinations were also caused by some kind of technology that was similar to how a television receives a signal, so too did my brain receive a signal from some kind of transmitter.
It made sense at the time, but now that I’ve been stable for years, I can see that it was just a brain disease.

To me they just came about. I never saw them as spiritual. Some are good companions others are mean.

Neuroreceptors in the brain, dopamin levels, epinephrine & nor-epinephrine neurotransmitters are imbalanced. Blood flow in a normal person’s brain is much different than that of a person with schizophrenia.

I don’t believe that my voices are spiritual. They want to hurt me. My visual hallucinations are another matter, though. I have often wondered whether or not they could be real. On the one hand, I know that they aren’t there. One the other, I think that I may be seeing real demons. They are here to terrorize me or tempt me; I don’t know. It is very scary, though.

I believe it’s the subconscious chatter of the mind being audible. For example: if I’m mad, the voices in the water and coffee machine like to talk mess. If i’m happy and conent they say they love me. That’s just my experience with them.
I realize that others have voices that can be indistinguishable from real voices so it may be different. But I am still spiritual in a way. I just don’t believe the voices are spirits or other entities. They are a part of me.

Even with my nightly visits and or trips i assumed it was a highly advanced tech they were using to manipulate time and space… but most people that have them assume demons of a spiritual nature…
Soo… that part comes down to personal views… the brain is so complex it tries to rationalize its unknown faults with known variables…

The voices, according to scientific research, can come from specific pathways in the CNS.
The mesolimbic (VTA --> Nucleus Accumbens, Amygdala, Hippocampus) and the mesocortical (VTA --> Prefrontal Cortex) pathways are involved. There exists such a thing called a “signal:noise ratio” and when schizophrenic, we have a lower number (Too much noise!). Too many Dopamine 2 receptors being stimulated causes positive symptoms (Hallucinations, Delusions, Disordered Thoughts, etc). The number of D2 and D3 receptors is increased in SCH. There is a complicated feedback loop with the PFC --> Thalamus --> Hippocampus --> VTA --> Thalamus again and I do not understand it all yet.
Complicated stuff to say the least.

Medical science has a long way to go on how to correlate dopamine receptors to voices heard in the brain.
