Someone at work was talking about this and got me thinking if it was true. I never finished school, so does that mean I’m dumb?
Of course not.
My mum I had growing up as such only ever cared about academics and would only be friends of date someone who had been to university.
I think that’s ridiculous.
I know some incredibly intelligent people who are not educated at all.
They are probably much smarter than her and all her university friends and boyfriends put together.
Plus what is a university education if you are a horrible arrogant person….
No don’t worry about that.
Just be you n love that and do what you can or want.
School just teaches people how to live disciplined lives. Work can do the same. The more disciplined a persons life is the more specialized is their profession. People want people to be disciplined because they know what to expect. The undisciplined life is seen as foolishness according to various life philosophies.
Nar, someone who has gone to college is more educated in a specific field than someone who hasnt, but isnt more intelligent.
There may be many reasons why a person doesn’t go to college, that have nothing to do with how smart they are.
For me it’s ‘bullying related trauma’ and the non academic part of being a college student.
I have an unpopular opinion about college for someone who is close to graduating. It’s a bit overrated as far as counting one’s intelligence. I would say I have more knowledge in my specific field than the average joe, and I have learned how to properly research topics and, to some extent, what is quality information.
With that being said, there are many ways to gain knowledge that don’t require college. Being self-taught is incredibly valid, as is life experience. Life experience is so overlooked, and this is where we gain most of our wisdom from.
I think there is an over estimation for just how much college prepares us, and just how much it teaches us. I’m not more intelligent in all of life’s different fields and aspects because I went to college.
My dad took only a couple of classes at a community college and then dropped out but he was an avid reader and very intelligent. I never thought of him as dumb or unintelligent. He could talk on a variety of subjects with confidence and competence.
He learned how to be a surveyor when he was in his twenties and made that his career. He had a calculator for his job in the early 1970’s when they were still relatively new and taught himself trigonometry for his job… He did surveying for twenty years before retiring. He was partly responsible for a lot of the big freeway interchanges that were built in San Jose, Ca.but he also did smaller jobs like medians in big roads. The state of California trusted him enough to do the job when one error could cost millions of dollars. But he made few mistakes.
Plus, he was cool and had a good sense of humor.
My dad was also extremely intelligent, but he died two years ago. He was a great inspiration to me.
Neither of my parents who are/were very intelligent went to college/university. My father got a scholarship to King Edward’s Birmingham. Most of the children where he lived left school at the earliest possible date. He chose being an army officer over going to university. Then very quickly changed course and joined the Foreign office.
My mother was raised by just her mother from the age of 7. She did very well at school . Rather than put a heavy financial burden on her mother,by going to college/university. she got a job at the Foreign office. That’s where she met my father.
My father did start to do a law degree several years later. I’m not sure whether he finished it. Both are/were more intelligent than the average Oxbridge/Ivy league graduate.
Studying in college gives chance for getting into a job easier the more we study and educate ourselves. For me what I have witnessed around me is that one who goes to college usually gets better in life if utilized well. Others need to do self learning and learn from experience to get better in life. I am the latter. I did not do well in the college so had to choose a different path to survive.
I dropped out of college on my 1st semester. I started a small business that ran for almost 10 years. I lived an atypical 20s, and it was prob the only way i survived in the work world when i developed mental illness.
College is just another way to deep learn knowledge or skill for specialized things.
No, of course not.
You should avoid people that think in this way.
Institutions are just a write off with money,
Specilize on some focused subject.
But real growth and smartness come from living a life.
I have see so many, they learn a ton and earn a ton and does not have the smartness to even differentiate real and unreal, or false beliefs.
They are even scared to question their own beliefs, as its their foundation is based on it.
If some thing breaks their foundation they will never be able to recover.
There was a picture i had it made lots of sense to me,
It said
Who is done MD truns out to be a Doctor,
Who is done MBA turns out to be a Business man,
Who has done BA turns out to be Politicians,
Who has just been to school turn out to be Guru.
It this Guru(Right and wrong) runs the Politicians,
Politicians run the Business man,
Business men run the Doctors indstry.
If you check the asset owned in the world,
First comes with the people who know right and wrong, then to politicians, then with business men then with the well educated people.
Smart people go to college and dumb people go to college. Same with people who don’t go to college. There are many types of smarts too. There are memory smarts. Verbal smarts. Non-verbal smarts. Common sense.
I didnt go to college and i have a high non-verbal iq with a much lower verbal iq. I have a memory disorder and a learning disability. I never paid attention in school. So i can solve problems. Cant express myself great in speech. Cant remember what i learn. Basically i can rewire an electrical panel but i dont know who was the first president. Thats an example. But i dont think im dumb.
No, not at all. I dont believe you have to go to university to demonstrate youre smart
Intelligence comes in different forms and manifests itself in different ways, and nothing beats the wisdom of experience.
Einstein said " it’s not the facts you learn in scool that make you smart, but the ability to think that’s true intelligence"
I think college can potentially make you smarter but it’s absolutely not necessary.
No. And depends on what you are categorizing as smart.
Some PhDs in technical subjects can be socially inept. What do they make you think?
Know a guy if I asked him to write his own name he will make mistakes but he has done well in life given he was below average in school.
Smart people don’t need to go to college because they already know
