If sz negative symptoms are from low dopamine wont antipsychotics make the situation worse?
It’s more nuanced than that. I think one way to see it is as a dopamine malfunction
Really? I believe antipsychotic lowers dopamine at several receptors. According to the dopamine hypithesis of sz too much dopamine in the brain causes psychosis. But at the same time low dopamine from drugs leads to parkinsonism.
Lets dig deeper please. Maybe thats why schizophrenics drink lots of coffee. It has a side effect of raising dopamine
Thoughts?
There are different parts of the brain involved in all of this I belieive.
In the case of schizophrenia, the dopamine hypothesis proposes that dopamine transmission is overactive in the mesolimbic areas and underactive in the prefrontal cortex
I had planned to link the article I got this from, but I seem to have lost it. So I guess it stands as is.
This is really a topic for @Aziz
Also, Partial agonist AP’s ,in theory , lower where too high and raise where too low.
These are Vraylar, Abilify and Rexulti.
I prefer to leave it to my doctors and therapist these days now that I have good ones.
This is a good point, honestly. We have been over these things so many times on this forum and still don’t really have solid answers. I think I will bow out as well.
I can enjoy things that raise dopamine now and Choline in the body and brain. Without my medication these things would seriously drive me insane. I mean if I didn’t have medication in me I don’t think I could enjoy even a cup of coffee without having an anxiety attack and going into some psychosis.I take a lot of supplements that affect Nero transmitters and choline and dopamine in the brain. I could not enjoy their benefits without my medication to keep me stable.
Sorry, not sure i want to dig that deep. Im not trained
