I watched Split

Forgive me for posting in a closed thread, but I think this needs to be clarified as it’s a fact people should be aware of and really not open to discussion.

Studies unequivocally show that people’s attitudes towards other groups of people are affected by how that group is portrayed in the media. So either they do not know, or they get affected even if they do know. Either way, consistently portraying groups of people as having bad qualities is detrimental to that groups treatment by society as a whole. Additionally, since this is most likely not a conscious decision, there is good reason to believe that warning against such stereotypes before or after the movie has absolutely no effect on this process, since such heuristic processes are normally unaffected by conscious deliberation. Portraying people with MI as dangerous will lead to people thinking they actually are dangerous. The same goes for other minority groups. This is why it’s important to have a balanced portrayal of all groups of people in movies, in series and in the news.
