So, one of the worst movies of last year, for many reasons, was The Visit. It was bad, and then, to me, it was deeply offensive because it portrayed the mentally ill as inhuman monsters out to hurt the innocent.
I brushed it off after awhile and chalked it up to mainstream ignorance on the part of the director, M. Night Shyamalan. I thought it was a bad movie and will just fade away.
Well, he’s apparently done it again. He has a new movie coming out called “Split” about a man with DID who kidnaps three young women and the nightmare ensues.
Really? Can’t think of anything original, so going to cash in on societies fear of MI??? It’s really shameful and I’m hoping someone with some clout will call him out on it…
I was a little offended by the visit as well. If shyamalan needs a motive for commiting murder he will create it using mental illness. Not only that, he paints us as sick and twisted individuals.
It’s hurtful and frustrating. It encourages others, especially young people who see his movies, to continue their dark-age thinking. I’m just shocked that he’s continuing the attack on MI with this new movie.
Even my husband thinks I’m taking it too seriously, but he doesn’t understand. People who hide their MI, like I do, are just pushed further out of society by the message movies like these convey.
I definitly agree. I remember when NAMI sent me an e-mail about a modern family episode they thought was offensive and misleading, they should do the same thing for Shyamalan’s movies. I have met people with DID and they aren’t like that character. I hope his career goes to s***
He’s made some good movies, and he’s made some stinkers. These two fall into their own category of offensive, but no one will notice and he’ll go on to his next oroject without a second thought.
I don’t know enough about him to have a personal opinion. Did he have a bad experience involving someone with a mental illness? Is he purposely targeting this group? Or is he just another person who is ignorant (uneducated) and unaware? Either way, it brings to light the necessity to inform people otherwise.
Maybe he just had a bad experience with DID as a child and his other personality is lashing out on it by making horrible films.
You’re hilarious, @Apathy!
And I have been guilty of taking things too seriously. But two movies in a row demonizing people with mental illness is two too many. Someone needs to pull him aside and set him straight… What’s next, a person with Autism terrorizing a small town??? Oh, wait, people would be outraged by that!
Yeah certain mental illness is acceptable but others are not because barely anybody sees those ones or comes out about them.
Totally agreed and you put it great.
You should write your opinion and send it to a portals like buzzfeed or such.
I called my therapist yesterday and she hates people like this…she says no one is exempt from crazy thoughts. You can have a traumatic brain injury and come down with psychosis the next day. “Normies” take their mental health for granted. I don’t wish psychosis on anyone but sometimes I do but I need to get rid of vengeful thoughts I think.
Ain’t that the truth…
