I’m going back to school in March. I have to go I to undergrad (i have a bachelor’s degree) and take psychology and ar t courses before I can apply to the art therapy masters program. I’m starting with psychology 101. But I’m so nervous.
That’s a awesome and very noble goal.
Do they have a disability services at your university?
If so, you might want to call them and see what they can do to help you succeed with your goals.
Yeah I forgot about that thank you!
Good luck @Moon!
What kind of accommodations should I ask for? It asks how your disability affects student responsibilities too and I’m not sure what tk put :S
When I was in college the accommodations I had were being able to take tests by myself in a testing room, able to take a break or two during class to get out and get my mind right for a couple mins and then come back in. Also excused absences for when I went in the hospital.
That’s all I can think of rn. Good luck!!
I would kind of like to be a piano teacher myself. But, first, I got to learn how to play.
Do you miss social cues or have Asperger? The reason I ask is that I been harmed many times by people who miss social cues or are Asperger when I’ve reached out for support when I was vulnerable & traumatised. As an art therapist you’d be in a caring profession which is best suited to people with a caring nature, for example, strong empathy & compassion. I served my highly traumatised clients well as a social worker before I burnt out. Before I was burnt out I was empathetic, rapidly able to build trust & rapport with my clients. My managers would commend me on my skills and ask me, how did I do that?
So when it came my turn to be the client my expectations were that I’d meet very empathetic and compassionate therapists. Unfortunately I didn’t. It’s one thing if you’d find it interesting, satisfying & fulfilling to be an art therapist. It is a totally different thing if you’d help your clients. Their art is likely to depict all kinds of trauma such as child sexual assault & incest. If you miss social cues, have poor social skills & poor empathy then ask yourself if you’d help or harm your clients.
I have autism but I have strong empathy and social skills now.
That’s an admirable job to want. The art therapists get the most respect in mental hospitals. I hope it all works out for you.
