I think it partially was a mix of alcohol and weed that caused my schizophrenia

I was at a party back in 2015 I think it was, I was drinking and smoking weed at the party. Days after I started to feel extremely scared and saw objects transforming into monsters. The worst part went away, but I continued to see faces and eyes in objects for a couple years afterwards. That also faded after time. But I think the use of alcohol and maybe especially the weed triggered something in my brain that later developed into sz.

Damn I wish I never touched weed.

Do you have a theory for why you got it, or do you think it’s 100% genetics for you?

Hello @magz, I have moved your post to the DX’d - Sz/SzA forum as it deals directly with schizophrenia and it is a better fit. The Lounge is intended for general banter not specific to mental illness. I hope this is okay.

Certain drugs can trigger SZ symptoms but they are not the sole cause for developing schizophrenia

Genetics plays a huge part

sounds a little bit like thorn apple seed turn to me

Statistically speaking, if drugs were a cause, many addicts or occasional users would develop permanent psychosis. This doesn’t happen. On the other hand, there is a strong genetic factor. It is indeed possible that certain drugs act as a catalyst, speeding up the onset for people who were already predisposed to it.

I think there may be more than one cause of schizophrenia, drugs being one of them. In my case, i believe it was genetics and prolonged stress.

Yes to prolonged stress. I thought I had cancer and struggled to get closure as a teen. In the background I completed highschool.

The being paralyzed by hope it was nothing and fear that it was something is hard to explain.

A number of things caused my sz. Alcohol and marijuana played a big role. I’m an alcohol, and I used to drink a lot. Some days I would drink over thirty beers. When you drink like that alcohol can contribute to your mental illness. Marijuana didn’t help.

I think for some people, based on genetics, illicit drugs can provoke a onset of psychosis.

They say it can trigger from mj and alcohol, but you would have had it anyways…

I used to do daily marijuana and I used mushrooms every now and then. When partying abused indiscriminately of alcohol, coke, mdma and speed (all same night).

After 2 or 3 years of becoming psychotic, pdoc reduced my meds to 5 mg abilify. I had one crazy night again. I became psychotic again a few months later. I was still smoking mj almost daily tho…

Now, couple of years later I’m fine. I feel something is not ok… maybe from negatives, maybe from meds. I still smoke mj, tho.

I have a appointment with my pdoc next month… I will tell him that I still smoke. I hope I can get off meds soon…
