I might go down to 1mg of Risperdal a day

I recently had my Risperdal dose lowered from 3mg to 2mg a day and I’ve been very pleased with the results thus far.
No mania, no signs of psychosis, just smooth sailing so far.
It’s only been about 3 weeks since the med adjustment but if I’m still stable in six more months I’m going to ask my new psychiatrist if I can go down to 1mg of Risperdal
If I do well on 1mg the next step will be an attempt at living my life antipsychotic free.
I’ll still remain on Depakote.
I’ll take APs only when I’m actively psychotic.

You change or want to change your doses of meds very often. It must be frustrating to you.

My last doctor that I saw lowered my Risperdal dose because he couldn’t help but notice my hands twitching.
The Tardive dyskinesia is caused by my antipsychotic
I might even have drug induced Parkinson’s
I see a neurologist next month.
I’d rather be on less meds than more meds especially at my age.
There are real reasons for these med changes @TheCanuk
So far so good

Yeah the lowest dose possible while still helping your mental health is the goal. Im on a medium dose of my Olanzapine (10 mg)

10 mg is a sweet spot for many on olanzapine
I was on olanzapine for a short while years ago.
My pdoc took me off of it because it raised my blood sugar levels too high and messed with my thyroid but overall it’s a very effective drug for many.
Unfortunately it didn’t keep me stable but I was on a very low dose (7.5mg)

I applaud you @Wave for successfully being able to lower your AP med. My pdoc and I both want to do that with me, because of my age, but we are too scared.

I did well taking Olanzapine only when I felt psychosis incoming many years ago

This is great news. May you get free from antipsychotics soon. Good luck.

Going to definitely ask my pdoc to go down to 1mg of Risperdal
I’m doing really well on 2mg so far

If you’re doing really well on 2 mg. Why mess with it and go down to 1 mg? You could have issues. Be careful Wave.

Just for the heck of it I decided to ask the AI Search engine, Perplexity if 1mg of Risperdal is typically an effective maintenance dose for severe bipolar.
Their answer was no way.
Typically doses of 2mg to 6mg a day is effective.
I think that I’ll remain on my 2mg dose.
I don’t want to push my luck
Thanks @TheCanuk

I wish you the best of luck HOWEVER you gotta be careful those meds and almost all meds have a “therapeutic dose” and it’s a bad idea to go below that usually

I’m not a doctor tho
