I might get a dog soon

Still having doubts but a dog would be cool.

Pros:

  • it would force me to become more responsible
  • I would make a true friend that doesn’t betray me or talk behind my back and which loves me unconditionally
  • it would force me to be more physically active (going out twice a day to walk the dog)

Cons:

  • money spending for food and vaccines and health check ups; but I am not thrifty
  • I would need to leave the dog alone in yhe apartment for 9 hours a day while I go to work
  • possible cleaning hassle (shedding, pooping)
  • and trouble with my neighbors if the dog gets too noisy

Which dog breed would you recommend? I lean towards smaller and calmer breeds. But I am not knowledgeable on the matter. Any extra advice is much appreciated!

Man, I didn’t read all your post, but I saw that you need to leave it alone for 9 hours every day? Sorry but you can’t do that to a dog. Leave it alone for a couple hours while you shop for groceries is ok, but not 9 hrs

Edit: you can’t work for 9 hours and leave the dog alone. Maybe that would be ok for a cat, not sure…

Yes I know, cats are self sufficient. But dogs are more empathetic… I am still hesitating.

Do you live in an apartment? If a dog is left for so long, it might start barking. I had my neighbour in the apartment below me get a dog and she left it alone, it would bark for hours. Dogs are great I know, but they need the right environment to live.

Edit: I know you’re a good guy Andrey, so I won’t lecture you, just know what you’re doing

Leaving a dog for a 9 hour work day is totally fine. Millions of people do it every day.

There are loads of online quizzes that’ll match you with dog breeds. Might be worth taking a bunch of those and seeing what pops up most often.

Leaving a trained adult dog alone in the apartment is fine, but it would be difficult for a puppy that hasn’t been housebroken.

Taking care of a puppy is a lot of work.

Well, I think having pets in general is an awful practice and animals should be free, but I don’t think my opinion matters much either.

Of course your opinion matters, you’re an intelligent young lady.

Maybe you’re right, animals should be free. The animals in zoos looked depressed to me because they don’t have their freedom.

What do i know.

I agree LED animals shouldn’t be caged up.

I just got a puppy and it needs constant supervision. Needs taking out to potty all the time to toilet train, play time, walks. Also puppies have to be fed 3 times a day not twice so you need to be around for that. Food had to be weighed.

If you are working bare in mind it WILL sleep deprived for a while. Mine is quite good at night and has settled down after a few weeks now but still I have to get up at 5am with her. I don’t work but if I did there is no way I could have handled it. I was shattered at first.

Perhaps think about adopting an older aged dog. But leaving a dog for 9 hours I don’t recommend

Also puppies need to be crated for their own protected when you leave the house and toilet trained and no puppy should be crated 9 hours a day (sorry)

Or you could consider a cat.

I have a pug. They are high mantinence but very friendly and don’t require too much exercse.

If you ever do get a dog I’d suggest staying away from anything like a collie dog and go for a small breed.

I’d recommend adopting a dog that is out of its puppy phase but you can leave dogs at home for 9 hours. Used to happen to my dogs for years. There are lots of cute pups at shelters and most shelters are happy to answer questions!!

This might be somewhat mutually exclusive.

This is generally true, but it depends on the dog breed and personality to an extent. Some dogs are OK being left alone and some are not and can develop behavior problems. It also depends on their ability to not go potty for that length of time (if they’re confined inside).

Dogs are expensive at the vets…our dog Rooroo has diabetes and it costs $180 dollars a month to get her her insulin…not that your dog would be diabetic but it happens…

I don’t like the idea that you will be gone 9 hours a day…unless you can cage train your pet…awful life for a dog if you ask me…why don’t you just get a hamster or something that can go in a tank.?
