My dad is concerned that the cat will jump on the tables and countertops and eat our food.
Is this true? @77nick77 @LilyoftheValley
Thanks @laros!
Is it Gonna be a outdoor cat?
Can you test a cat out first?
Rescues sometimes act like they hate you for their entire lives. Not all of them, but some.
I’ve had best results with kittens but we’ve rescued some. One of the rescues hissed and bit us every spare moment it could for five years.
Not to be a downer that is, but it’s a bit of a lottery. I hope you find a cat that’s a good fit! I prefer snuggly lap cats
Do cats jump on to tables and eat the food?
@agent101g?
Well in my experience if you tell them no enough times they’ll stop doing that.
I didn’t mean to scare you off rescues, maybe you can spend some time with the cat at the shelter to see what its personality is like.
No it’s going to be an indoor cat @Yellowdiamond
Thanks @agent101g
Yeah I’ll be spending lots of time with the cats there.
Cats don’t need to be bathed. It’s pretty easy to cut cat toenails if the cat is not too feisty. My mom has two cats and I cut their toenails once a month. You can generally train cats not to jump on the kitchen table or kitchen counters. With that said, I wouldn’t recommend leaving a delicious steak on the counter unattended.
Do you think picking them up and putting them on the floor every time they hop up is enough to break them of the habit?
It seems to be working with my grandparents and their cat.
Thanks @Moonbeam
It depends. Some cats are more determined than others. Generally, consistency is important. Every time the cat jumps on the table or counter, remove it.
Unfortunately, my mom let’s her two cats do whatever they want to. One of them sits on the kitchen table when I go to her house for lunch. It’s a very social cat and wants to be wherever my mom is.
Whoops, I just read that a spray bottle is not a good way to discipline a cat. They don’t associate the spray with the bad behavior.
When Chloe was with us we didn’t let her sit on the furniture, we kind of solved the problem by getting a cat tower. It gave her the option of being at our eye level without touching the human furniture. We put the tower in a high-trafficked area of the home and she would swat at us every now and then lol.
She was our first outdoor cat and we rescued her from near death outside twice, one time she was stuck under a drainage grate in a thunderstorm, water rushing all around her, we had to pry the grate off with a bar and get her out. Indoor cats have much longer lifespans for sure, my childhood cat made it to 21.
wave if your cat jumps on a table u ll spray it with water untill she learns not to do it.
I heard that spraying a cat is not healthy.
I’d rather just pick up the cat and place her on the floor.
Yes @77nick77
I read this too
u dont harm the cat by spraying with water and they learn fast .
mine are trained now
But what @agent101g said seems to be a good idea. Cat’s naturally like to climb and have a high vantage point. So that’s one reason they climb on your table or countertops. Getting a cat a cat tower will satisfy their liking for being high.
Do a specific search for keeping cats off tables and countertops. I saw an article on it but I couldn’t copy and paste it.
