The Humane Society is open tomorrow so I’m going to go down to see about adopting a cat. I’m not sure if I’ll find one that I connect with, but we’ll see. It makes me sad to go down there. You just want to take them all.
I’m thinking about a cat but my sister said I won’t be able to bond with it unless it’s a kitten. I don’t know about that.
Haha j/k. I prefer dogs but maybe a cat is the right choice for you. They are lower maintenance when they are older I suppose. Dogs seem more personable most of the time though IMO.
I generally only adopt the older kitties that others pass over. I also take on the more challenging rescues. It’s tough with oldsters because you lose them sooner, but I do what I can to make their last years their best.
I got a cat that was about 8 months old. I got it from a Petco program where people fostered cats and then Petco gave or sold them to customers or whoever wanted a cat. My sisters took me to Petco for my birthday and I picked out Milo. The beauty of getting a cat that age was his traits were pretty clear by that age but I could still enjoy having a young cat. He was friendly and affectionate, litter box trained and healthy. His personality was mostly formed and I think his best trait was he was not scared of people.
I can’t stand cats who are scared of people and will bolt under the couch or a chair when you enter the room. My ex-brother-in-laws cats were both like that. Any time I (or anybody) entered the room they would scatter and hide. My sisters cat is a little like that too. She will come up to you after awhile if she knows you but the first two years she was always running from me every time I tried to pet her. What’s the point of having a cat if it’s not going to sit in your lap and let you pet it?
My cat would calmly sit with his front legs crossed when I came home from work to the studio. He had the whole apartment to himself but when I was on the computer or eating dinner he would come right up and lay down near me. He loved being around me. And when I had visitors he was calm and friendly around most of them. That’s what I loved about him. But yeah, he still was young enough to be cute and have youthful energy but when I got him I knew what I was getting.
Declawing is considered animal abuse where i live. No decent vet will perform that operation. Plus it leads to a whole host of other issues for the cats.
I preferolder animals also, because you don’thave to train them. You can just be their companion.
Awe so cool @Leaf. I’d love to adopt another cat but just not in my current future with dad. He’s such a downer and doesn’t want another. Very exciting and hope you find a good companion.
