It’s really scandalous . I’m fighting the urge to get really political over this.

A tiny bit political is fine, as it is directly related to mental health. Just try to avoid arguments.

Let’s just say I don’t like the way a certain UK party has scapegoated the disabled and poor for the 2008 recession with it’s austerity policies.

The stress caused by this to people with severe mental illness is not conducive to good mental health .

Appeal and get a lawyer. I got disability (SSDI) the first time within two months of applying, but in addition to recurrent schizophrenia, 6 hospitalizations, 4 suicide attempts, I was also declaired ā€œgravely disabledā€ which in the United States pretty much guarantees disability.

How do you get a disability lawyer?

Check the phone book and start calling likely law offices. In the yellow pages it lists most of the lawyer’s specialties.

Here in Australia on the disability support pension the word ā€œgrantedā€ disappeared. In case I come of my disability pension I go on unemployment benefits. The government force unemployed people to work for the benefits.
Wish i could buy a maschine earning money for me.

I got so stressed over the benefits situation I was seriously entertaining the thought that some mental health workers were actually government agents .

I think if you have support from secondary mental health services its much easier to be awarded disability benefits. I’ve never had any trouble claiming ESA or PIP. Its always gone smoothly and I’ve only been called to a medical once, all the rest where paper based. I have chronic schizoaffective disorder and live in supported housing. The two people I live with who have Aspergers and mild learning disabilities who are quite independent were also successful in their PIP claims too, all because they live in supported housing too.

I think it also depends on the quality of supporting evidence a psychiatrist ,or other health professional, provides .
That varies widely .

The supporting evidence I’ve had hasn’t been much beyond I have x diagnosis and it’s likely to be lifelong .
