Shadow boxing alone in my room makes my back hurt pretty bad when I try to do things like sweeping floors and taking out the trash. I don’t know why I’m that way, but I’m afraid that if I keep going I will damage my back permanently.
Hey crimby. I think boxing (and other sports that rely on lower back axial torque) are not good with lower back pain.
I used to do kickboxing (kicks put even more pressure on the lower back) and every once in a while I needed to get 10 days off. I don’t have any herniated discs or anything like that. I guess I would warm up and stretch properly, if I ever go back.
Yes. You’re right. Right now I am in a situation where I could have to fight, but so far it looks calm on that front. I really don’t know what kind of shape I am in.
Are you overweight? I think doing those movements (even skipping rope/running) while overweight may do more lumbar damage.
Do you compete?
I wrestled when I was little, and I did a little judo in my twenties, but now I’m 65, and I would want to get a thorough checkup before I competed in anything.

@crimby , what situation are you in that you may have to fight???
I live in an assisted living center for the mentally ill, and the situation is not dire, but I see it developing. I’m not going to push my luck around here. I don’t really know about their disposition.
I’m sorry you have to live with that fear @crimby
