@firemonkey don’t we all have that neanderthal heritage? I know it’s different chromosomes and stuff but we did interbreed with them way back in the day. Is this really unusual?
Taken in the way you put it; yes it’s not overly unusual. However it becomes more interesting when you factor in that those things listed are things that apply to me in 2021.
I know little about the genetic tests you send away for. Are they reliable? I’m curious. I’m multi generational Australian on dads side ( so basically England or it’s subordinates ) and German on my mothers side.
I think it would be worth exploring if they are any good…??
Ancestry wise they’re most reliable at a continental level. At a subcontinental level, i.e French or German,it’s less reliable. The people you match with are a better guide to your ancestry. There are far worse interests that you can have. I’d recommend checking out 23andMe, Ancestry DNA,Family tree DNA,Living DNA and My heritage. There are others, but those are the big ones when it comes to using DNA to trace your Ancestry.
23andMe and My heritage give you a basic idea of where your matches have ancestry from. This from My heritage.
American matches tend to be higher , but as you know it’s a melting pot of a huge number of ethnicities (for want of a better word)…
23andMe has a ‘4 grandparents from’ . As expected English speaking countries top my list… Just posting Australia as you live there.
Australia (9)
Has 1+ grandparents (9)
Has 2+ grandparents (7)
Has 3+ grandparents (5)
Has 4+ grandparents (5)
The non English speaking that have 4 grandparents from the same country are.
Norway (5)
Has 1+ grandparents (5)
Has 2+ grandparents (2)
Has 3+ grandparents (2)
Has 4+ grandparents (2)
Sweden (4)
Has 1+ grandparents (4)
Has 2+ grandparents (2)
Has 3+ grandparents (1)
Has 4+ grandparents (1)
The % of them that have 4grandparents from the same country is what is more relevant ie 5 out of 9 Australian matches of mine have all 4 grandparents born in Australia. I have a 2nd cousin that last I heard from her was living in Wantirna.
Thanks matey. I’ll check it out. I have some people in family doing the family tree stuff. It would be interesting to try and match some of that up in the long term. Thank you for your post!
