These are hallucinations that happen just when you are beginning a state of restfulness when falling asleep. I have been having these a lot lately, and they are horrible. Anybody else have these. It is not dreaming they happen as you dose off to sleep. I have been up since 1 AM because I saw a demon and it startled me now the voices tell me not to sleep, he will get me.
I get these kind of Hallucinations frequently - especially upon waking up Hypnopompic Hallucinations
I have these too. Usually it is a scream which is such a pleasant experience to have right when attempting to escape reality. I would be more frightened seeing a demon though. My counselor told me people without schizophrenia experience this too but I can’t help but wonder if it a sign of being susceptible to schizophrenia since I vividly recall some visual experiences where I would see an old man in the room staring at me and be paralyzed and unable to move. I heard a voice yell Hamas and I looked this up many years ago on the internet and it freaked me out to find out who they were. Anyway, I still unfortunately experience the screams now and then.
Yeah hypnogogic hallucinations are not typically associated with schizophrenia, but with sleep disorders. I just wondered how many people with schizophrenia experience this.
Yes, I am very curious too. Glad you asked.
I used to experience sleep paralysis pretty frequently and would hallucinate during it. It could get pretty creepy. Now I don’t get sleep paralysis anymore but I do get a lot of closed eye hallucinations right before I fall asleep, different flashing images.
I’m trying to teach myself how to control them. I noticed if I start thinking about something random then a lot of times that’s what I end up physically seeing. So whenever I get them if things get creepy I just continously think about bunnies or whatever lol. I used to change my sleep paralysis hallucinations by remaining calm. Scary stressful ones immediately changed into harmless sounds.
I wish my hallucinations were like that, just before you sleep and then gone. Mine comes earlier, before I’m sleepy. I can see a demon in the dark. Light up the room with my cell phone and it’s gone. I hear voices whispering and screaming. I try to drown the noices in my head with music.
Hypogogic hallucinations aren’t the only hallucinations I have. I have the standard audible and tactile hallucinations. I too use music to drown them out - very loud heavy metal.
I had this on seroquel. Not on abilify. Problems always seemed to happen just as I was about to sleep with seroquel.
Hmmm that is strange I am on abilify and have these problems
I have benign hypnogogic hallucinations-buildings, houses, people’s faces. Lately, this spring, it’s been pictures of daffodil shoots and other budding plants. I’m surprised that so many of you have such ghastly images and voices. I know when I’m falling asleep when my thinking doesn’t make any sense anymore.
The most important thing is that you are actually able to fall asleep every night. If this is keeping you awake for days, or it begins to, you’re in serious trouble and you might want to see your doctor ASAP. That’s how 2 of my relapses started.
Yes I have just when I was falling asleep or waking up. I would attribute the cause of this phenom to the naturally occurring hallucinogenic chemicals in our brains. Schizophrenics are known to produce more of these chemicals than what is normally found. They discovered this back in the 60’s when doing research and possible cure for this devastating illness.
I get intense hypnagogics at night as I drift to sleep- I just got used to it and am conditioned to associate them with sleep.
I am fine falling asleep.
It is right when I wake up and get out of bed stuff like that starts but just mildly.
been having these hypnogogic hallucinations at the point of going to sleep, its pretty weird and last night i was scared and had to phone someone.
