How tv portrays mentally ill

I know this has been posted before. Law and order SVU commonly shows mentally illness as the afflicted person is out of control before being forced at some point to take meds. They are magically all better and stable. It takes more than one shot and a lot more time at least it did for me.

They often bring up the fact that its the patients choice but they always show dangerous things the mentally ill do. They never show a stable mentally ill person.

Yea, it caters to people’s fears for adrenaline marketing… it’s the same kinda high as stealing as a kid it seems to me.

SVU is a stupid f*cking show. It’s one of those redundant shows where the detectives are “super heroes.” They walk into people’s rooms, wave their Glocks around yelling “CLEAR!” and offer up opinions that they think the viewing audience will find appealing. It plays to the lowest common denominator. SVU, NCIS, CSI, etc etc are all the same. What a crock of horseshit.

Well, everyday, real life schizophrenia is usually pretty boring.

I have always wanted to see someone with negative symptoms portrayed in a film…

But that would be someone like me… sitting very still for a very long time… not having enough energy to keep up the conversation.

The world is all messed up.

You can kill 130 people in Paris, but you are still not tagged as being a mentally ill person.

Instead, you are simply labeled as a nasty terrorist.

However, if you harm no one, but claim to be hearing voices, then you are a seriously deranged mental nutcase.

I don’t watch SVU, but I’ve been bothered by the news. When there’s a shooting somewhere, they often announce that the shooter has schizophrenia. I wonder if it’s even true, and what bothers me is the attitude that because the shooter has sz, it’s like oh, he’s one of those! Like it makes sense because it was a schizophrenic and we all know they’re all killers given the chance. That kind if deep misunderstanding bothers me.

I’ve never watched Law and order SVU , but if it’s message (even Hollywood style) is for mentally ill people to get help, then that’s good surely.

Criminal Minds, the TV show, portrays those afflicted with a mental illness as a 'bad guy".

I mean its ridiculous.

Every suspect on that show suffers from some form of mental illness.
