How Our Brains Inhibit Our Unwanted Thoughts

Of course, the idea of GABA-ergic dysfunction in sz is not new.

But I’m not aware of a lot of progress studying new GABA-ergic medications.

the news is that they found the specific region, the hippocampus, where deficient gaba causes intrusive thoughts and possibly other unwanted thoughts. theyve pinpointed it! this is exciting to me.

think of it this way, maybe there is a med, a benzo or whatever which is already approved which is selective for the benzo receptors in the hippocampus? it could put rumination, intrusive thoughts etc even hallucinations on hold.

As far as I can tell, this isn’t really new. Perhaps specifically to the hippocampus vs the prefrontal cortex, but at least part of the hypothethises behind the PV interneuron cell therapy (in rodents) has to do with GABA in the hippocampus. Eta: according to wikipedia, PV interneurons represent about 25% of GABA-ergic cells in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.

There are meds, like gabapentin, which people are using now which can be helpful. But I haven’t seen GABA based meds in the preclinical pipelines specific to sz. Maybe this will help open an indication/trials for gabapentin for intrusive thoughts though.

that would be great (a trial of gabapentin or some other med in intrusive thought and related indication). personally this news seems new and exciting! these are the symptoms i mainly suffer from. if we can treat them im basically back to normal.

I don’t care what happens to me.
Alive or dead, healthy or ill,
functional or dysfunctional, I don’t care.

How severe are ur intrusive thoughts? And what are they like? Also what exactly are intrusive thoughts? I am asking cause u and I both have marijuana induced sz and i feel like i have IT. what other symptoms do u have? And whats ur medication like? Lots of questions.

If you suffer from anxiety, you could ask your pdoc. It is used in anxiety.

Another interesting paper.

@twinklestars I think this paper merits a separate topic.

I thought about it, but it’s about a year old and the way the author writes makes it difficult to understand.
