How much is your weekly food budget?

I only have to buy for myself. I budget £40 a week for my food shop. I’m trying to eat healthier and more consistent with meals times. Out my budget I get 1kg of chicken thighs at £3 (This cooks two chicken Korma curry meals with rice, lasts me two days) I get 1kg of basmati rice (once every month) Jarred Korma sauce. I get decent sausages, again two meals, I get bread and 4 pints of milk, Cereals, Potatoes which for 2.5kg is around £2, Grated cheese for jacket potatoes and grilled cheese toasties. I get frozen Pizzas and other freezer stuff. I get ground mince meat for bolognese and pasta. I get Larpack butter every 4 weeks. A large whole chicken is only £5. Eggs are around £3 for a dozen.

I can easily make £40 a week last me. I shop at Morrisons and eat pretty decently. I don’t eat the exact same things every week, I tend to spice it up.

How much are there basics where you are and how much do you spend on food?

No, we have staff onsite 24/7 and they help cook with us when needed. Some other group homes in the same company have set meal times but here we are more independent.

Easily over a $100 a week. I try to shop sales but I cook dishes that have odd, or too much of one ingredient. So I have two buy a whole bag of cashews because a recipe calls for a 1/4 of a cup. Or a bunch of green onions when all I need is one. Or a bunch of celery because I’m making potato salad and it calls for 1//2 cup. That’s what’s good about Hello Fresh meals which I get about twice a month. All the ingredients are measured out precisely so there’s no waste. And one meal has two servings so I can cook a Hello Fresh meal and eat off it for two days. But yeah, I’m spending like over $400 a month just on myself for food.

I pay a set amount for rent. I sometimes buy additional food or take out food but I don’t have a weekly amount I pay. I also pay all my own bills and the internet, but not always food.

I don’t have a set amount. Some weeks I may pay almost nothing directly because I just eat meals prepared by dad, the next week it could be 150 bucks I spend on food because I do some shopping and/or buy takeout for all of us. It varies greatly.

Edit: So basically, my food is like a paid utility taken out of rent, unless I choose to buy additional or take out. If I’m greedy that week I can skimp.

I used to pay more of the weekly food costs in addition to rent when I had Snap benefits, but I no longer get them.

I’ve been eating pretty well lately because they’re giving us extra food stamps. When the extra stamps stop I will have to go back to getting most of my protein from the sandwiches in the Dollar Tree. There are other cheap sources of protein, but my lifestyle will still be a little thinner.

A lot- between $70-75. I can understand all the budgeting advice, but putting into practice is a whole different thing. Batch cooking for example- that often gets mentioned by the experts. With my planning and organising skills - non starter unless helped. Less meat more beans and pulses- see post in vegan thread. My daughter gets my grocery shopping once a week . I don’t have a menu plan. Seldom ,if ever cook from scratch.

My combined EF difficulties and less than stellar cooking skills mean anything that involves a lot of ingredients, preparation , and timing is a non starter . I’m very much a chuck it in all in one frying pan/wok/casserole dish etc person. One pan cooking- I think that’s the term that’s used.

I could reduce it by cutting down on things like crisps, cakes, and caramel wafers. I like those sachets of flavoured coffee which aren’t exactly cheap. I also like iced coffee, but it’s even more expensive than the sachets of coffee.

I do sometimes look for things that score well re both price and rating, but not as often as I should.

I have £55 in my budget, but it has been more like £60-£70 these days

It’s definitely creeped up a fair bit

A few years ago I got away with just £35

I spend approximately $75 a week on groceries if you were to divide up my monthly shopping bill into weeks. I too will be calming back down when the extra food stamps quit next month.
