I’m on Seroquel and Rexulti. I feel that over time the medication has lost its efficacy, in other words I have adapted to the medication and now it is as if I am taking nothing at all. I have read articles which talk about this and they say there is no info for medications after 3 years, in other words no one can prove that they work for extended periods of time. I can testify to this, Geodon worked for me for a number of weeks to months then it simply lost efficacy.
MY question is, how long have you been on your antipsychotic and what antipsychotic is it? Have you ever experienced the antipsychotic poop-out effect? After how many years/months.
I’ve been on Clozaryl for years and it is still effective. So far Clozaryl is the only drug that ever worked for me and it still works pretty well. Sometimes I feel like it isn’t working and I stop taking it. Then things get worse and I need to go back on it. Then it works again.
I was first put on Prolixen when I was 21. I was on an extremely high dose. From what someone told me, they stopped giving anyone that high of a dose of this particular medication. Anyways I was on it for about 25 years. My doctors had tapered me down to a reasonable dose and it worked for the most part the whole time I was on it. But then a doctor changed me to Resperidone and it has worked OK for the last ten years and I don’t notice any side effects or I am used to them.
I think what happens is that each AP stimulates certain receptors, so maybe the receptors get over-stimulated to the point that the AP doesn’t work anymore?
If this is true, then the first fix that comes to mind is changing APs when this happens.
I’ve been on Seroquel for 5 years, and I’m still doing well.
Took years for Geodon to stop working for me. It actually may have still been working, but I was going through a high-stress period. Olanzapine worked for me for years as well.
I guess I am somewhat of a noob. I have been on an AP since June 2015. I am still in the “I wish I didn’t have to take this” stage but I also accept that I will always have to take it
8 years. Mostly on Risperdal, which worked fairly well. Laudable was the best but I couldn’t take it with enough food consistently after a few years and several relapses at the end. Currently on an injection Abilify Maintena.
When I first went on AP’s my general Alexander the Great asked me “What the Hell are you doing? I want you to stay in fighting shape. Those AP’s really make you gain weight you know.” I told him I could think better and eventually became his top military strategist. Of course it was easier back thousands of years ago. I take a much lesser dose than I used to due to my slightly advancing age but occasionally give tips to the US military for military preparations on invading Canada (whoops I let the cat out of the bag.).
I’ve been on haldol for many years but it eventually stopped working. My voices r back and their not as bad though as when I’m completely off meds. It took like two years for my voices to come back.
