How long did it take for your schizophrenia/psychosis to be treated?

Pls, do this poll.

  • Less than 2 weeks
  • Approximately a month
  • 2 months
  • Approximately 6 months
  • A year
  • 2 years
  • Over 2 years

There are different factors coming into play here.

How long were you admitted at the psych ward? Did you attend therapy? Do you constantly take your meds? Etc

I voted for “more than 2 years” and “less than 2 weeks”.
I heard my first voice at 5 and had other symptoms at 9, but I wasn’t diagnosed until 22. But when I did get diagnosed, they put me on meds right away.

I too had symptoms early and had a depressive break at 23. Went psychotic at 29. It probably took 6 months to get a handle on it all…And thus my vote. Living with sz was a process that took me a couple of years at least to get to a good mental state…Lucky to have found this site and it’s knowledge from other punters!

There’s a mich better worded poll, so pls do that one if you feel like this one makes no sense and just to say no one(from the community) will know who chose what and neither will I be able to see who chose what.

It’s on dxd other

I am sorry that your symptom started so early. It must be very scary through your childhood. What make you decide to seek help at 22? Do they need to use high dose of med to treat you?

I wish mine was less than a week. Who knows what was happening to my brain for 9 months unmedicated

Well since it never completely ended it will go on probably until my dying day.

I was diagnosed at age 45 with acute depression with psychotic features. Looking back I think I had something terribly wrong with me from birth that only my sister could recognise. :grinning:

I was psychotic for a couple years before anyone did anything. It was a hard couple years.

I do need semi-high doses, but the meds I’m on don’t teally give me side effects.

I seeked help at 22 because I moved to a country where help was available and more high quality.

May I know what medication you’re on? Does it help?

I suffered severe anxiety throughout my marriage which was untreated. At the age of 45 I had what I called a nervous breakdown which was also left untreated. I had some delusions,

At the age of 47 I had full blown psychosis and my sister came and “rescued” me. I was attended to by Home Hospital and given Seroquel.

I returned to my husband and stopped taking the medication. We moved house and again I had another severe psychotic episode and went to hospital. Diagnosed with acute depression with psychotic features, Given Olanzapine. Stopped taking the medication due to weight gain.

Husband leaves. I spend a year on my own with no money, no food (apart from what was donated), and no son. I went mental not seeing or hearing from my son and ended up back in hospital again. Was put on a community treatment order for a year. Diagnosis changed to Schizophrenia.

Have been on abilify 10mgs since. I am now coming up on 54. I now count my start date as the age of 45 with a self diagnosis of depression with psychotic features… The abilify works very well for me. I have had no psychotic episodes, I have never heard voices, I have no paranoia nor any delusions. I do get some negative symptoms though. I have also been put on Lexapro for my anxiety which has helped me so much. I can now drive again, go out in public, do shopping etc.

Sorry my answer is so long. A combination of Lexapro and Abilify works great for me. :grinning:

I am glad that you found your magic pill. May I ask what med you taking?
