How do you explain lack of cognitive functioning to people?

For lower functioning people, it is difficult for them to imagine anything like recovery. A depressed person can’t see beyond the depression. A person with avolition can’t help themselves. Sometimes this goes on for years. You start wanting to commit suicide.

YES. Then I decided that whatever stress/illness I brought upon myself from trying to make myself better couldn’t be any worse than scraping along the bottom of life’s cesspool with a constant death wish. I’d rather go down trying.

In terms of getting past things I think a lot depends on the degree of negative symptoms you have. The less negative symptoms the more initiative and drive to work towards recovery.
Sometimes it can’t simplistically be put down to lack of effort to recover. Even here people differ as to the degree to which positive or negative symptoms dominate.
Also some people have the cognitive tools to work round problems in the way others don’t.
A lot does depend on the nature and scope of the cognitive difficulties . If you are lucky and have few cognitive difficulties then of course you are going to get past obstacles more easily than someone who does, with similar levels of effort.

Just say ur not as sharp as the avg person. Things like having thoughts quickly, organizing thoughts, planning, thinking in abstract ways u have a deficit. Kind of like being an athlete without muscle mass, coordination or cardiovascular endurance. U have a disadvantage.
