Whst does it mean when people say they are hearing voices? Like where do they come from? When I describe my experiences, I am told that I’m hearing voices, but I hear people talking about me. It comes right out of their mouths. So is that still hearing voices?
No, I don’t think that’s the same thing. I suspect you are imagining people are talking about you when they are not, though.

I have never heard voices either but I still have schizophrenia.

A psychiatrist told me not all schizophrenics hear voices but I hear them on occasion. You can see nobody is there.

How do you have it? What symptoms do you have?
Without medications I had all kinds of delusions. I’ve never had auditory or visual hallucinations but , for example I use to believe someone had inserted a microchip in my head and people could read my thoughts. Thats just one of many delusions I had while unmedicated.
Another example
I use to believe most food and water was poisoned so i use to boil rainwater and drink it and would only eat certain foods
i had hallucinations of negations. my hearing is all messed up like cognitive problems like auditory problems.
Sorry @anon52450205 . got drug off topic. Anyway, as you can see from my examples I am Schizophrenic, I just no longer have positive symptoms while on medication. Just negative ones.

We can hear song in our mind, same like that we can visualize pictures in our mind, also we can think about a thought or idea even if its true or false. These most of us can do. But what makes hallucination in some either auditory or visual is these individuals can’t distinguish whether its real or not. Same way thoughts or ideas (delusions), individual can’t distinguish whether its true or not. In normal people they know that its made by them or coming automatically like some times and when they dream. Thus they can quickly disregard it even if the theme is negative. But when the individual loss the ability to distinguish whether its real or not they start to respond to it and this is how issues start due to it.

Concerning how to distinguish whether its real or not. Antipsychotic drugs help to calm these hallucinations, delusions etc by reducing the individuals ability to create sounds in mind, visualize pictures in mind, create thoughts in mind. They may still able to make but not strong like before thus individual can quickly distinguish whether its real or not even if make or come. Therapy techniques also helps for example question the voices, pictures, thoughts to see if its real or not, practical etc. This way using logic or reasoning also help to distinguish and once its found not real simply not respond to it even if the urge is there.

I don’t hear voices. I did occasionally hear people calling my name when they didn’t, and that felt real and was a hallucination.
If you hear people saying things that they didn’t then that is a hallucination, but I think it is different from hearing voices in the standard sense. Sounds like it it still a pain the bum though.

You distinguish auditory hallucinations (voices or other sounds) by determining that they did not come from outside or through your ears even though you actually and genuinely hear them. There are “inner” voices such as when you are thinking to yourself in terms of language, or when you’re imagining you’re hearing something/someone, but the difference is that they do not “sound” like voices coming from outside.
If you are hearing voices and having difficulty determining if they come from the outside, you may try covering your ears or putting in earplugs. You can also try a sound recorder device and see if what you think you’re hearing gets recorded (on “tape”, so to speak).

Yes that closing ear method is very useful, can be applied any where. These kind of methods come under logic, reasoning.
Wow. Similar to what I’m experiencing. I think maybe I should try another medication, then maybe this stuff will go away.

This is exactly what I’m experiencing.
My voices come from the spirits in my head. They are silent but whisper and laugh and scream and have gender.
