How do you deal with AP sleepiness?

I started clozapine last week, and one thing I’ve noticed is that on it I’m sleepy all the time. I’m sleeping about 12 hours a night, if not more, and when I’m awake all I want to do is lay down and sleep.I am trying to avoid coffee because caffeine can make me anxious.

Any tips are appreciated!

Strong coffee and strong tea frequently during the day. It prevents me from sleeping during the day.
I would sleep 15+hours a day without caffeine, now about 8h.

Other than caffeine, there is prescription stimulants but I don’t recommend them bcz they can cause psychosis. Otherwise switch to Abilify or Vraylar. Most others cause oversleeping.
Also high volume music helps.

I’m on Risperdal and I’m sleepy and tired all the time.
I spend most of my time lying down on the couch.
I drink about 2 cups of coffee and that’s it.

Anything more and I’ll start to mood cycle.

Try green tea, it has chemicals that cancels caffeine’s side effects.

@falcon09 Try the same thing. Green tea won’t cause anxiety and will even reduce it.

I’m allergic to green tea unfortunately.

Wow. I’ve never heard of being allergic to green tea. That really sucks! I have a friend who is allergic to jalapeños. You can be allergic to anything. I’m allergic to lots of stuff. It sucks!

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I’ve been on both abilify and vraylar and neither worked for me. Abilify made me sleepy and vraylar gave me insomnia, neither did much for voices.

I read an article about going up when your alarm ring a certain time. You can practise it on, evening. Pretend to sleep and put your alarm and then go up and walk. (Havent tested it yet) :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
I myself sleep 12 hours and have hard getting up.

Easiest piece of advice is take it at night, and take it early in the night. But i assume you are already doing so. Some doctors may offer to put you on some sort of stimulant such as Vyvanse. Im on armodafinil but idk if that’s only prescribed for narcolepsy (which i have). However if caffeine makes you anxious there is good chance a stimulant might make you anxious as well. I heard an apple can wake you up as much as a cup of coffee can but i never tried it. I once had mint leaves put in water recommended to me as well for a caffeiene alternative but again didn’t try it.

If you are truly unhappy being sleepy all the time and caffeiene or stimulants aren’t options to you, it may just be better to switch meds

For me when I feel sleepy, I usually just sleep. If I have to go somewhere I find staying on my feet helps get me over the hump. Usually I am anxious about being out of the house and my anxiety keeps me awake.

doc wants me to take divided doses

Well then there’s your problem. According to literature, doses above 500mg require divided dosing, while below that you can take complete at bedtime.

I am on Risperdal 6 mg and find it very difficult to wake up in the morning…Once I am up I drink 2 cups of tea and the drowsiness reduces. I was on modafinil 2 years ago but it was causing an increased heart rate so my doctor had to stop it. I have tried Invega which is very much similar in effectiveness to Risperdal and it is less sedative but again it causes tachycardia(high heart rate) and headache so I am sticking to Risperdal which is safe.
