How do you cook dry beans?

They never cook well unless its cooked with a presto pressure cooker.

Boil them in water and either have them boiled or fry them after boiling, in oil and spices.

It takes forever
I think ideally you need to soak them in water the night before.

There should be directions on the package. Generally, you have to rinse them under cold water and pick out any rocks or sticks and bad beans then stick them in a large pot cover them with water at least two inches above the beans than let them soak overnight. Than just follow the recipe.

The recipe might call for you to cook them for an hour or a few hours depending on the type of bean.

But there should be directions and just follow the recipe.

Rinse them, put them in a crock pot, add plenty of water (if butter beans add ham) put on cover of crock pot, plug it in, put it on low go to bed 8+ hours is how long you want them to cook. In the morning turn off crock pot, transfer beans (and ham if added) to a lot on the stove, add salt and pepper to taste, bring to boil, lower temp and let simmer stirring from time to time, simmer for half an hour to full hour, after all steps are done serve (if it’s butter beans and ham make fried potato and corn bread!) It tastes amazing!

Ps I learned this from a southern cook aka my mom

Thanks, thats why they didn’t cook well, we cook them for like 1-2h. 8+h is a lot!

We did that but is it true that you need to put baking soda to make them cook faster?

I think its easier to just get canned beans.

@Aziz. They taste better home cooked and saves money

I don’t know about baking soda.

When I buy beans I usually get canned.

Yeah you have to soak them the night before like @anon63380492 and @anon83141956 mentioned.

I normally buy canned beans and rinse the beans through cold water in a strainer before heating them.
