How do i stop diabetes occuring whilst on olanzapine?

I dont eat much sugar but i do eat carbs

Cut out sugar 1515

biggest thing u can do is keep ur weight low. which is very hard to do on olanzapine. the only time i got high blood sugar from medicine is when i gained enough weight to become over weight. u can eat sugar and carbs if ur BMI is low but once u get into the overweight catagory or higher the risk becomes much larger.

if u are already overweight u could ask for metformin. it will help slow the weight gain and its also used for diabetes but people without diabetes can take it. i took it for a while on clozapine.

I’m probably going to be switching soon from clozapine to olanzapine and hope I don’t gain back all the weight I’ve lost. I already have diabetes from the meds and take metformin and Mounjaro. I wish I could stay on the clozapine but the cardiac issues are getting worse. My hemoglobin A1c is only 5.2 so technically I don’t have diabetes but if I eat high sugar foods like chocolate then my blood sugar goes way high, so I guess it’s more like impaired glucose tolerance. IDK…

I’m not sure if this is possible. :frowning:

WATCH YOUR WEIGHT!!! Don’t let yourself get fat! Rule no. 1 for preventing diabetes. This can be challenging to do on Olanzapine. Olanzapine can make you ravenously hungry. If it does, I’d ask my pdoc for a medication switch.

I’ve kept my weight stable on 7.5mg for years. It takes some dicipline though. Eating 4 meals each day, ignoring hunger inbetween, Excersising. Try to eat healthy.

i found clozapine to be a bigger gainer than olanzapine. i gained twice as much on clozapine than olanzapine

Turn to sugar free snacks or fruit

My guess would be the same things you would do if you have diabetes.

Eat mostly fresh vegetables. You can also have some fruit and some meats.

Avoid processed foods when you can.

Don’t eat too much red meat.

Avoid becoming obese. Yada yada…

Theres is one point where there seems to be some disagreements , though, and I’m not sure what to believe:

Some people say that, while sugar and carbs do cause high blood sugar in type 2 diabetes, they are not a direct cause.

Others say that increased insulin production due to eating excess sugar and carbs does cause type 2 diabetes because it causes insulin resistance.

I honestly don’t know who to believe on this front.

i believe excess weight especially in the stomach is the biggest cause. i have a family history and have eaten up to like 5 cups of sugar a day and blood sugar is perfect. almost my whole diet is carbs and sugar. i dont believe its the sugar. at least not the biggest cause. of course tho once u got diabetes, ur body can not tolerate carbs and sugar tho
