High Triglycerides and Risperidone

Got my blood test results back and my Triglycerides were off the charts high!
My cholesterol levels were very high as well.

Risperidone and other APs can cause metabolic damage.
I want his input and see if switching to a safer AP is worth it.
I’m headed towards getting a stroke or heart attack this way.

So tired of this ■■■■.

Anyone else have high Triglycerides or cholesterol levels?

Yeah me too Wave, I guess it’s the AP.

I remember seeing the doc about it, and he was showing me these charts about the possibility of heart attack with high cholesterol, as if it was my fault and I needed to do something about it.

Never had problems with high cholesterol before taking my AP , nor high blood pressure or diabetes.

Thanks for responding @fingolfin
I’m really concerned about getting a stroke or heart attack.
I’m seriously considering going back on Abilify.

Too many harsh side effects with risperidone.

Wave, I was diagnosed with high cholesterol about 10 years ago and I’ve been fine, I’m in my mid forties now.

I think the docs exaggerate the problem, but if it concerns you then have a word about it.

I know the docs had me worried, after the appointment I thought I was about to drop dead any second… but that was 10 years ago, and as far as I know my health is still fine. I honestly think the docs they exaggerate its seriousness.

Are you talking about family doctors exaggerating?

My triglerides are over 300.
This is in the danger range.

My weight is also a big issue.
Risperidone is contributing to this.

I was thin on Abilify.

Yeah I’ve high cholesterol. Stopped eating a lot of cheese and take cholesterol lowering pills. It’s just more medicine so it’s no big deal for me.

You need to make sure your doing enough decent exercise. Simplest way to more health benefits.

Yeh family doctors. I once mentioned it to a pdoc about my cholesterol and high blood pressure and he just said ‘don’t worry about it, they’re trying to scare you.’ That’s honestly what he said, and in my experience it seems to be true.

I can’t give you medical advice, but that’s my experience, if it concerns you then have a word with your doc.

Edit: my pdoc also said that everyone is on high blood pressure tablets and cholesterol tablets, I guess that applies to many people over 40.

I take a statin for my cholesterol already and I’m also on a Triglyceride reducing med as well.

I can continue to walk more.

Yes. I do. My doctor has been telling me my triglycerides were way high. He tells me that triglycerides are unburnt sugar and starches that turn into fat and collect around my heart. I’ve been walking back and forth in my room for an hour daily in an effort to burn off a few of my triglycerides. My doctor says that exercise is good to burn off triglycerides. My diet is shamefully high in sugar. Maybe I can get control of my diet and work on it from that end. One medication that is terrible for triglycerides is Zyprexa. It made me crave sugar and want to sleep a lot.

Yes, I try to walk around the house.
I’m too paranoid to exercise outside.

Same here. There are a lot of dogs where I live. Also, I hate to feel conspicuous.

@Wave I don’t think Risperidone is the real cause for high Triglyceride and cholesterol levels. All the anti psychotics induce metabolic changes. When I used Quetiapine at high doses (more than 600mg), I got an increase of Triglyceride and Cholesterol levels. This side effect is mentioned by Quetiapine manufacturers. So Risperidone at high doses may have produced this side effect. But one must also take into account our diet and our exercise pattern before blaming the anti psychotics.

Another issue is that, Risperidone helps make me gain weight, so therefore increasing my Triglyceride and cholesterol levels.
I’m trying to walk more, but honestly Ive been feeling very fatigued and lethargic for a while now.
I will be mentioning this to my family doctor as well.

@Wave

I’ve been taking an AP on a daily basis for over 33 years, and I have high triglycerides and high cholesterol. I had a TIA (mini-stroke) 6 years ago and was put on 325 mg of aspirin daily. I have no family history of stroke or heart disease. Also, I know I mentioned to you that my pdoc proved that Depakote damaged my liver (I was taken off of Depakote and my liver enzymes quickly reduced to normal range).

It’s no secret that psych meds have potentially serious side effects.

I’m glad you survived your stroke @anon17132524.
My grandmother passed away from a major stroke.

I will ask my doctor about aspirin therapy as well.
