I am currently taking Clozapine for schizophrenia but I have been experimenting with herbal treatments and vitamins. I currently take Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D3, Fish Oil, L-Theanine, Ginger Root, Garlic Extract, L-tyrosine, sarcosine, and aspirin. All of these help but I found a website that lists herbal supplements that are also supposed to help, it lists ginkgo biloba, green cardamom, licorice powder, indian gooseberry, and chamomile. Has anyone here tried any of these? If so what did they do? Thanks!
definitely remove the aspirin as @everhopeful rightiously suggested. i have tried gincko biloba, it is stronger than coffee. chamomile is popularly known to calm people down. it is not strong.
Do NOT take L-Tryptophan, I took it for several weeks and then suddenly was in severe pain throughout my entire body. It sent me through the roof and I could barely even lie down or get up, it did wear off after several days and thankfully Tylenol was able to take the edge off so I could function. I can never take it again, It is a shame because it helped me alot, I felt really good on it and it reduced alot of my symptoms.
Supplementing can help take away discomforts and counter side effects from the drugs. But don’t try too many things at once, because if there is a problem you won’t know which supplement is causing it. Introducing one supplement at a time is a good idea.
Personally I find basic supplements like vitamins, minerals and amino acids have the most potential to help me feel better and counter side effects from drugs. Also these type of supplements have less chance of causing serious interactions. Except some of the aminio acids that boosts dopamine and serotonin like tyrosine and tryptophan.
Many herbs that are supposed to work on stress, insomnia and fatigue doesen’t seem to work on me. I suspect this is becuase the olanzapine has modified my brain to the extent that herbs rarely work the way they are supposed to, and I end up getting little or no benefit from herbs that are supposed to have a mental impact. Herbs are more likely to cause interactions and allergies, so always be careful when trying something new.
Tyrosine is a dopamine booster. I would avoid taking that at the same time of day as you take medication since they clash. It might be good to avoid it alltogether if something feels wrong.
Chamomile and ginko are not good for me. Ginko gave me pain in my brain and chamomile I’m somewhat allergic to. I can handle one cup once in a while, but I can’t use it regular.
Be sure to try and monitor yourself, take a break from supplementing if something doesen’t feel right
