Hi, I suffer from stress prior to the onset of hallucinations. Would it be worth trying a herbal remedy to overcome this? What worked for you and why did it have a positive effect?
I took quite some valerian during my first psychosis, when I had no clue what was going on, and couldn’t sleep for days because of the voices. First time I took it was a very strange experience. Later on it was just sedative. Could be me, but the sedative effect seemed to wean off pretty quickly for me. I quickly needed a couple of capsules to help me sleep. Normally I don’t get stressed easily so can’t say how it would work for that, but I can imagine during the day it may take the edge off a little.
I take Kalms(available otc) from time to time if faced with something that makes me particularly anxious. It has hops, gentian and valerian. You are supposed to take 2 at a time but I found that hardly worked so ended up taking 4 at a time.
It works better some times than the others. Sometimes it makes quite a difference and others not.
Valerian gives me a headache. It also metabolizes in your liver, so be careful not to use it too much or too often. It has the same effect on your liver as alcohol. So does kava root.
Drug interactions are possible. Valerian may increase the effects of other sleep aids. It also increases the sedative effect of depressants, such as alcohol, benzodiazepines and narcotics. Valerian can interfere with some prescription medications. And it may interact with other dietary supplements, such as St. John’s wort. If you’re thinking of taking valerian, check with your doctor to make sure it won’t interact with other medications or supplements you’re taking.
I wasn’t feeling sleepy so I decided to take some and it made me hallucinate (hearing music) while trying to sleep. Wasn’t too bad when I first tried it, but didn’t really help in the long run.
