Have you ever experienced sympathy pains?

When someone you are close to is suffering and you can feel their pain.

I’ve only heard of that in regard to female pregnancy and male sympathy pains. At least that’s what I think I heard.

When i was younger i remember someone i knew i was with that separated their shoulder, seeing that was hard to hear/watch.
But now i seem be more walled off in regards to emotions for that. Like its not outwardly shown but i can feel physical discomfort.

I mean, I’ve experienced it in the sense that when someone else was crying- it made me start crying…

No. It might mean you are afraid.

I feel a wave of discomfort or pain all over my skin, it rushes almost like blushing but feels worse. I’ve learned to translate this into normal appropriate reactions.

That is a type of synesthesia. I have a similar version of it.

This is normal, and can be different in different personality types.
It is very common in parent-child relationships, where social bonding is strong.
I think it is stronger/weaker in different people, but anyone who has empathy probably has it to a certain degree.

In terms of social groups it can make people more at ease or more agitated.
Agitation is contagious, the more nervous people around, the more likely everyone else is going to be nervous. And people are easily made emotional when they are agitated.
I’m sure there are entire fields of marketing dedicated to this psychological phenomenon.
On a historical scale, fascism and other movements of the time, exploited this for political reasons.
And to be honest I don’t think that has ever really stopped since.
