I’ve done both over the years, and met nothing but nice people. But I suppose it begs the question…
Who is possibly more dangerous? The hitchhiker, or the driver who picks up the hitchhiker?

I once hitchhiked to no success. I’ve also seen hitchhikers that I thought might have stabbed me if i let them in.
I’ve driven a group of kids back to their college one time when they were stranded at a restaurant and it went well.
I’ll never do it again tho simply because I value my life.
I’d never pick up a stranger with my kids in the car. But if I see someone walking on one of our long, local roads I’ll stop and ask if they want a lift.
I have a hitchhiker a ride once and I asked him if he could read my mind. He said yes and b/c the devil has hold of me. I think he was big into religion b/c he had a bible.
Hitchhikers guide through the universe. Hitchhiking is always adventerous. Being in a situation to do it or pick up.
It might be a little different in Canada @PatrickT.
The truth is it’s not safe here in the States to pick up a hitchhiker.
No way…
I’ve done both. When I was young and invincible.
I was walking along several times when I lived in a rural area, people offered rides. Sometimes I accepted sometimes not. I think it’s safer in a rural area than it is on a highway with people going over state lines constantly, you never know who you’ll get.
I think it’s safer to pick up a hitchhiker than it is to be one. I rarely do though. I’m too cautious.
Back in the safer days you could always meet ladies by picking them up hitch hiking, one time I picked up three and we ended up at a party, the good ole days…
I’ve picked up a few…I’ve been picked up a few times.
one time a guy tried to pay me for a ride with a big nug of primo. I declined. I didn’t want any grass in the car.
one time i got a ride and then a guy asked me if i wanted to help him with a job at his house…lol…i declined
Just like @LED I’ve done both when I was invincible
Hitchhiking used to be popular during the 70’s when I was growing up.
Not so popular here in the States anymore.
I pick up hitchhikers. Just waiting for the kitchen floor to level out then will pick up some more… ha ha
I’ve probably hitch hiked more than given rides to hitch hikers, but I have done both. I’ve met some really interesting people that way. There were a couple of rides that gave me the creeps. One time these guys were really drunk, and they gave me a ride in the back of their pickup at around 3:00 am, when there was almost no traffic on the highway. There was a lot of junk in back, and I had to lay on my back and hold onto the sides of the bed to keep from sliding off the pile of junk. They were swerving back and forth on the highway, and the pile of junk kept shifting underneath me. I was hoping that pile wouldn’t shift hard enough to break my grip. I was glad when they finally turned off to the town where they were going. I was glad to get away from that ride.
Hitchhiking used to be popular in the seventies where I grew up at in California than a high profile case happened where someone was picking up hitchhikers and murdering them in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It scared a lot of people, it made people think twice about hitchhiking. When I was 17 in 1978 I got my first job as a dishwasher in a restaurant. I used to hitchhike to and from work. It was only about 6 or 7 miles. I didn’t always get picked up but I got rides frequently.
You couldn’t pay me enough money to hitchhike now at age 57. My hitchhiking days were over long ago. I wouldn’t pick up any hitchhiker now either though I did that too when I was younger.
My last contact with hitchhikers was about 4 or 5 years ago. I was driving by myself 150 miles to see my parents and I saw people hitchhiking along the way. I saw two girls hitchhiking and I had a half-empty 12-pack of soda in my car and on a whim I pulled over near the two women (they were probably in their early twenties) and when they walked over I said, “I’m not picking you up but here’s something to drink” and I gave them the soda and they smiled and thanked me and I drove off feeling good about myself but when I told my sister this little story later she said it was not a good thing to do because I got their hopes up that they were going to get a ride. And as I’m writing this I just thought that it was a bad thing to do because they were out near a freeway and if they drank the coke the wouldn’t have anywhere near to go to the bathroom.
both. just be careful doing either.
Both in the 90’s and into 0’s
One time I was supposed to meet someone I liked at the mall in a neighboring town. They didn’t show, and I couldn’t stand being there by myself. So I decided to walk 10-15 miles to my aunts house which was closest.
I probably could have made it but I was indecisive about where to turn. Did I mention this was in the Summer heat?
So some people in a beat up car offered me a ride. I may have been in the beginning stages of heat exhaustion. It seemed like a better option than walking the rest of the way in the condition I was in. I was antsy that they wouldn’t stop, so I opened the door in a hurry and half fell/half jumped out when they reached my aunts home that I had a key to. (as far as I knew, my mom wouldn’t be home)
They were pretty nice to me the whole time, however.

Nope. Had someone drag me into their car once though so… Yeah I am wary of strangers. And also people I know
I have been picked up a few times broke down on the interstate. One lady told me God told her to pick me up. I was very greatful as I was in the desert in the middle of nowhere.
