Has anyone with schizophrenia tried modafinil

I have ready some published studies that adding modafinil to your current medications has shown some positive outcomes in people with schizophrenia.

Has anyone tried this and can comment?

How could I convince my psychiatrist to let me try this as it’s not the normal approved treatment.

Do people think it should be easier for people diagnosed with schizophrenia to be able to try this?

Any comments or thoughts?

I just asked my pdoc for it, she said it may cause a psychotic reaction and said no.

I was on it for a while to help my concentration. It worked, didn’t make me crazy, but it was too expensive to keep up.

how much did it cost where you were? some places have government concessions and it’s very cheap. How did you get prescribed it? what did you say? I need help getting a prescription for it to enhance cognition and motivation because Zoloft side effects were too bad for me that’s why I switched my antidepressant to sam-e which helped but now I find it’s not strong enough for cognition, motivation negative symptoms etc

Yea worked for me for 2 years, then it made me psychotic. Now even baby modafinil dose makes me paranoid. After my 1st relapse, i cant even tolerate coffee now.

(worrier) advantage in memory and attention tasks Little or no response to modafinil. You are more difficult to hypnotise. Placebo is more effective http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/10/magazine/why-can-some-kids-handle-pressure-while-others-fall-apart.html?ref=magazine&pagewanted=all

what dosages were you on for modafinil? What do you mean by baby doses of modafinil? what antipsychotic and antidepressant if any were you on? when you say paranoid do you mean like hallucinations or delusions or both?

I was on 100mg modafinil daily. By baby dose i mean 50mg modafinil also made me paranoid. I was on clozapine and fluoxetine. No i never had hallucinations or voices. I just had paranoia which means it felt like people are out to get me or kill me.

what dosages of olazapine and fluoxetine were you on? did your doctor think maybe increasing antipsychotic dosage and lowering modafinil dose would help? why do you think it worked fine for 2 years then a bad reaction so much later on?
did your antipsychotic dosages change?
it don’t understand why the reaction happened so much later on? Did you ever take more than 100mg daily? does anyone have an answer to these questions for me?

I’ve been taking it for 2 months. I’m on 200 right now. It gives me a little anxiety sometimes, but I feel so much more engaged with the world on it.

I believe it can help some people and think if really someone got a bad reaction to it 2 years later there must be another cause because the reaction must of been much sooner otherwise it doesn’t make logical sense to me. That’s sort of like saying my petrol tank was empty two years ago and now my car won’t start even though my petrol tank is full, it must be the fact that 2 years ago it was empty. It doesn’t really make much sense.

Sounds like modafinil is preferable to stay a little more active than not using anything, I’ll direct this thread to my pdoc.
